I usually write these articles and send emails on the day the paper comes out. I apologize for the lateness. Life happened. I have a new delivery driver, so yesterday I went along and showed her the route, helping with deliveries. And of course chatting with everyone we met along the way! I normally work on my article while the papers are being delivered, but here we are.

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, also known as Diversity Day, is celebrated on May 21 every year. It is a day set aside to appreciate the cultural diversities between different countries, states, and people in the World.

Yes, three-quarters. That is a really big slice of the pie being culture-related.

This has led to efforts by the United Nations and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to curb this in a bid to achieve one of its major objectives — bringing peace into the World.

I’m not a fan of war. I’m not a fan of hostility of any kind and I sure don’t like bullies either. Whether it’s the president or his administration or people commenting on social media…we must be better human beings and show compassion for others! It’s simple stuff we learned in kindergarten!

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development presents an occasion to deepen our understanding of cultural diversity, promote it and highlight its significance as an agent of inclusion and positive change.

It should be celebrated by all in the world as accepting each other’s differences is one of the most important ways to bring peace between people, countries, and the world at large.

I love this phrase that English poet William Cowper coined back in 1785. He wrote in his poem ‘The Task’ “Variety is the very spice of life that gives it all its flavor.”

Life would be so boring if we only had one spice in the kitchen, or if we only listened to one type of music, read only one topic of books.

But I know folks who only watch one source for their news. Beyond being boring, there is a danger of missing important information and different viewpoints.

To truly understand what’s going on, it’s important to check out different sources and listen to variety of opinions. On a lighter note…
