Tuesday night was a BIG night in Michigan. Square One candidate Christina Hines won the Democratic primary in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District! And she won with 45% of the vote in a three-way primary — a clear, decisive result in a competitive field.
But the results are only part of the story. Here’s why Christina’s win on Tuesday matters so much for November:
MI-10 is primarily based in Macomb County, one of the most politically fascinating counties in the country and a bellwether for the Midwest’s working-class vote. Macomb used to be a Democratic stronghold thanks to the automotive industry. In fact, it’s where the term “Reagan Democrat” was coined. Obama won Macomb in both 2008 and 2012. Then the county swung hard to Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024. Trump’s 2024 margin in Macomb alone was 68,000 votes, which accounted for most of his 80,000-vote margin of victory across Michigan.
What makes Macomb unique, though, is that voters there have long been willing to split their ticket — even with Trump on the ballot. Despite Trump’s dominance at the top of the ticket, for example, Democratic County Executive Mark Hackel won his fourth re-election in 2022 with 61% of the vote. Macomb voters care more about the candidate than the party, and they tend to reward leaders who show up for them.
What our team has learned firsthand is that in order to win in Macomb, the candidate needs to appeal to union families, working moms, and people who remember when Democrats fought for them. That’s precisely the lane Christina Hines is running in as a prosecutor, labor ally, and working mom of three young children.
Christina has spent her career fighting for victims of sexual abuse, human trafficking, homicide, and hate crimes. She’s a lifelong Macomb County resident, and she knows exactly what’s at stake for working families in MI-10. She’s running on lowering the cost of living, pushing back against price gouging, raising the minimum wage, and protecting the institutions Macomb County families rely on.
As Christina put it herself: “Congress has too many millionaires but not nearly enough moms who get things done.”
And her campaign is walking proof. The Hines campaign knocked over 20,000 doors in the primary, talking with and listening to voters from all walks of life. Christina’s focus on the people she hopes to represent never wavered. That’s what led her to victory on Tuesday night.
The general election on November 3 is going to be tough. The Republican nominee is Mike Bouchard, son of the popular longtime Oakland County sheriff of the same name, who will be another rubber stamp for the Trump agenda. Cook Political Report rates MI-10 as leaning Republican, which means Christina will need to win split-ticket voters to flip this seat. We believe she can — but not without all of our help.
Competitive primaries are good for democracy, but hard on campaigns’ wallets. Christina’s got just 88 days to flip this seat blue, and she needs all the help to get across the finish line.
