The 2026 keeps on chugging, and last week, three new World Coffee Champions were crowned. The events took place in Brussels, Belgium, at the European leg of the World of Coffee event series. The World Brewers Cup, World Coffee in Good Spirits, and World Roaster’s Championship all took place over the weekend, each with a new name taking the top spot.
We’ve got two Build-Outs for you this week, and they are definitely of the Summer variety, in that they are in vacation destinations. First up, in Orlando, Florida, Filigree Coffee, whose lovely new cafe is a must-visit for any out-of-towners. Then, in Honolulu, Hala Tree just opened coffee shop adds to a bustling Waikiki coffee scene.
Most of the uses for upcycled coffee grounds come via them being converted to biochar. While note terribly difficult, the process can take an hour and requires pre-drying. But researchers have discovered a new method that only takes 90 seconds and requires no prior preparation, which could open up more uses for coffee grounds, at a much larger scale.
Custom espresso machine mods are nothing new, but there has perhaps never been one that so completely changed the design that what results is completely unrecognizable from the original shape. That’s what happened to a La Marzocco Linea. Copenhagen fashion brand Heliot Emil teamed up with Joe & The Juice and design and fabrication studio Caliper to create a truly unique take. Featuring no straight line, the new machine is as much a statement piece as it is a functioning coffee maker.
