Chris Jones is the Manager of Digital Channel Strategy at Cedars-Sinai and a board member at SocialMedia.Org Health. He has over a decade of experience in digital marketing, working for brands like UCLA Health, the Special Olympics of Southern California, the Los Angeles Lakers and Fox Sports. The through line across all of his work experience is connecting brand, data and purpose at some of the most well-known sports, healthcare and nonprofit organizations.
Chris thinks connecting offline is the best way to find inspiration, and is maxed out on new and emerging networks.
In the latest Social Media Diet, read on to see how Chris finally found the perfect travel bag, and ways he sets limits on consuming content on social.
What is your favorite social network to spend time on?
Instagram.
What now-defunct network would you most want to revive?
Myspace — I loved pretending to be a coder, the top friends feature (always controversial) and custom music.
What is your earliest social media memory?
Does AIM count? If you know you know.
What sources—online or off—do you turn to most frequently to stay in tune with culture?
Podcasts, books, and – most importantly – with people in real life.
Who is your favorite creator and why?
Marques Brownlee, for his ability to take technical information and distill it in a digestible way. Andrew Huberman, for how consistently he turns science-backed information into practical takeaways you can apply in your life almost right away.
What brand deserves more attention on social?
po3agency. They’re a marketing, social, branding, strategy and PR agency for talent, brands and events in the sports industry. I love their video content.
What’s your favorite new or emerging social network?
I know I need to keep up but I don’t want to think about another platform at this time. 😅
What’s the last topic you researched way too extensively on social media?
Anti-theft travel bags for an upcoming trip. I’ve watched too many TikToks of people getting their phones snatched that I now have extremely strong opinions about zipper placement and crossbody strap length.
What is the last thing you were influenced to buy—or deinfluenced not to buy—because of social media?
I finally bought the anti-theft travel bag after my latest research binge.
What’s your preferred way to take a social media break? How often do you aim to take these breaks?
Outside of work, I try to stay off social as much as I can. I’d rather be behind the camera than scrolling, and when I do post something, I post it and move on — I don’t really sit there refreshing for likes.
What’s your least popular take on the future of social media?
Overconsumption of social media is worse for you than smoking — especially when it inhibits real-life interactions and community.
What commonly held social media “best practice” do you disagree with?
That video should always be short, with many cuts/disruptions in pace to retain attention. Focus on telling a great story and the rest will follow.
