Oldhammering Away In Obscurity

I thought you’d like to see some pictures of some Rogue Trader-era models that I picked up recently, or, through the magic of 3D printing, made myself.

Here’s a couple of Rapier mobile heavy weapon platforms from Dr. Spork. I’ve painted them up in Battle Masters’ colors to go along with the Techmarine I painted a few months ago.:

Back in the 1st and 2nd edition days, the Rapier was a mobile crew-served weapon used by Space Marines and Imperial Guard alike. They were difficult to find in stores even when I got into 2nd edition in 1995, though I think they are available again in the Horus Heresy game. Next up is to paint some servitors that I made from North Star’s excellent plastic Stargrave Automatons.

Not yet painted are these Rogue Trader-era inspired Space Orks from Red Nebular and Tinboyz from Trollet Miniatures. I am slowly building an Oldhammer Space Ork force from eBay auctions, 3D prints, and new productions from Knightmare Miniatures and others. I greatly prefer the aesthetics of old style Orks over the 3rd edition+ gigantic green cavemen.

You might not know what a Tinboy was. That’s OK, I didn’t know either until the other day, when I saw one for auction on eBay. I had seen pictures of them back in 1995, but had never seen one in a store and they were already written out of the rules by 2nd edition. A Tinboy is a crude robotic caricature built by Ork mekaniaks in mockery of the Orks’ enemies. You can see a couple of Beakies here and also a couple of ‘Panzees’, or Eldar. I have not yet printed the Squats.

Here’s a lot of GW metal orks from 1st and 2nd edition I got on eBay for a decent price. They are painted well enough for my purposes, but I may spruce them up over the coming months.

Finally, here are some more of the Cosmic Orks from Badger Games. I bought these at Historicon two years ago and I’m sure I showed some others in previous posts. These are much larger, in scale with ‘modern’ GW Orks, but have the aesthetics of the 1st and 2nd edition Orks, no doubt because they are sculpted by the legendary Kev Adams.

First is this Ork who I think looks like legendary pro wrestler “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner. Thus, his orky compatriots know him as the Big Bad Dakka Daddy.

And here is one of his flamethrower toting brethren. I love the helmet.
