In this episode we reach one of John’s most pastoral moments: “perfect love casts out fear.” We explore how God’s love, perfected “with us” in the life of the church, gives real confidence for the day of judgment and uproots the deep, quiet fear of rejection before God. John insists that those who are united to Christ already share His standing before the Father, and that this settled verdict changes how we pray, how we suffer, and how we relate to one another. We also wrestle honestly with ongoing struggles with fear and anxiety, and why this promise is refuge rather than rebuke. Finally, we see that love’s authenticity is tested not in our claims about God, but in how we treat the brothers and sisters right in front of us…where forgiven people become forgiving people, and a fearful community learns to live as beloved children.
