September brought many excellent flash fiction submissions themed around the Two of Wands—our card for last month. The card has multiple themes, including themes surrounding perspective and the making of fateful decisions, and when we asked your submissions to be horror, you sure as hell delivered.
As pleased as I was with the stories our submitters came up with, one story rose to the top: “#NoFilter” by author Ria Hill. A pinnacle of both fine storycraft and content fitting our themes, “#NoFilter” packs a massive punch to the guts. The story has sci-fi elements like something out of Black Mirror—not quite our typical aesthetic here at Spindle House, but flawlessly executed and deliciously grotesque. It’s a story that lingers in the mind, one that makes you think and rethink. In other words, a damn fine story.
And I’m so honored to say we’re not the only ones who think so! It is with great joy that I learned “#NoFilter” made it onto this year’s Stoker Awards recommended reading list, along with other authors you’ll know and recognize. “#NoFilter” is, without doubt, in outstanding company, and we couldn’t be more pleased. Go read it for yourself! It won’t take you long, we promise.
We’ve shuffled and drawn for our November Dark Tales from the Tarot, and we can’t wait to see the stories that come from this card! While technically a “lesser” card, the Ten of Wands features memorable and evocative artwork, and its meaning is equally … well, heavy.
Card Themes: An immense burden, the danger of overwhelm. One who carries more than they can bear. The curse of responsibility or obligation. The weight of the world.
Suit Themes (Wands): passion, creativity, inspiration, fire.
We will be open for your submissions of flash fiction horror, themed around this card, from November 1 to November 15. Before submitting, be sure to read the full guidelines on our site. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Note that this will be the LAST iteration of Dark Tales from the Tarot this calendar year. Beginning next year, 2025, we will reduce submissions to only once per year (with a proportionately increased prize of $50). More details to follow soon.
As we announced in our previous newsletter, 2025 will see some changes for Spindle House, including a transition to a new web hosting service that better fits our budget.
