We’re excited to reveal the cover for THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WOMEN READ (On Sale October 13th), an empowering journey to self-actualization by a former Evangelical Christian pop singer whose life was transformed when she began reading books that had been forbidden to her.

Julianna Glasse was an exemplary Christian wife, leading prayer sessions for her husband’s Major League Baseball team and their wives. But when, out of curiosity, she began reading Plato’s Republic, something inside her shifted. She began asking questions and hungered to read more, embarking on a radical, empowering journey to self-discovery and purpose and reclaiming her life as an autonomous, independent woman.

This Is What Happens When Women Read is at once a dramatic personal story, a conversation starter about women’s freedom, and an inspiring tribute to the power of books.

This month, we chatted with Mary O’ Malley from Skylark Bookshop about the importance of booksellers and her favorite reads from Spiegel and Grau!

Why are relationships between publishers and independent booksellers so important?

It is so important for there to be a close relationship of trust between the publisher and the bookseller. Publishers need to trust the bookseller to bring the readers and the books together, and the bookseller needs to trust that the publisher understands the readership of each Indie enough to bring us the right books for our customers.

What’s your favorite S&G book to recommend?

I view the origin story of Spiegel & Grau and their inaugural book, Fox & I, as a bookish love story, and Fox & I remains one of my favorite books to recommend, especially since it spawned a lovely relationship between Catherine Raven and myself. When we visited Yellowstone a few years ago, Catherine gave us a private, guided tour, and I will never forget our time together talking about her life, her fox, her publishing journey, and her joy in the world around her.

In this rapid publishing climate, what makes a book truly stand the test of time?

The books that will stand the test of time are the stories that the booksellers fall in love with, because those are the books that will continue to be recommended over and over again.
