To our Sound Signal Subs - We wanted to take a moment to say thank you for reading, sharing, and spending time with Sound Signal. This newsletter has always been a space for exploring what’s new and what’s next in music, and that ongoing conversation means a lot to us.

Sound Signal is taking a brief hiatus, but the conversation doesn’t stop here. In the meantime, we’ll be sharing a series of essays from Third Bridge Creative co-founder Sam Chennault that explore emerging patterns and trends across music, culture, and technology. These pieces take a deeper look at the ideas shaping our work and the industry at large, offering a broader perspective on where things are headed and why it matters.

We’re looking forward to returning soon. Until then, we hope these essays spark new ideas and perspectives along the way.

— Andrew Marcogliese, Director of Music Intelligence

Culture shapes our identity, and we in turn shape culture. It’s a symbiotic relationship, a social negotiation that requires both our participation and meaningful interaction with others.

Platforms place us in siloes that make the experience of listening intensely personalized, but the more they orient the experience around our preferences, the more disconnected we feel from one another, and from the culture, the art form, and ourselves.

We become trapped in our own skewed likenesses, unable to see what we’re actually being shown. Culture no longer shapes us—it fills mental space on commutes and insulates us from one another. In 2026, for most people, music does more to separate us than bring us together.

The very good news is that the above is becoming orthodoxy in a certain set. There are real grass roots efforts to meaningful re-engage with music culture. There’s the outgrowth of music communities on Reddit, Substack and Discord, and streaming alternatives such as Cantilever, Qobuz, and Nina Protocol are very slowly gaining traction.

There are clearly cracks in the platform era, and things are changing. With the advent of AI, the way we interact with technology is changing rapidly. The doomsday scenarios around this transition have been well documented and seem frighteningly plausible, but it’s also vital to articulate the future we want to see.

That future is the focus of the essay below. It imagines a world where platforms stop optimizing for passive consumption and start functioning as interpretive layers with surfaces that connect your listening to broader cultural lineages, reflect patterns in your own taste back to you, and treat you not as a passive consumer but as a participant in an ongoing cultural conversation. What that looks like in practice, why AI makes it feasible now, and what it means for the people who make the music and those writing about it, that’s where the essay goes.

While Spotify has set the standards for curation and playlisting, the Swedish company has largely avoided text-based editorial until now. But that’s changing, and their new “About a Song” feature provides AI-generated blurbs that pull from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and other outlets to give listeners context about what they’re hearing. We take the feature for a spin, and provide insight on the technical achievements of the products, as well as the creative gaps. It mirrors a pattern that our agency has seen repeatedly: companies investing heavily in the technical infrastructure, while ignoring the craft of storytelling.
