The American South. The American West. The American spirit. Coyotes on empty roads. Have you heard the story of Joseph Beuys?
He was a German artist who locked himself in a room with a coyote for three days as part of his experimental art piece I Like America and America Likes Me.
He flew from Germany, landed in New York, was put in an ambulance and blindfolded until he was inside the room he planned to stay in with the coyote. He did this because he didn’t want to see anything else of America. No landscape, no views from the car windows, nothing. So he’s blinded and transported. Over the course of three days he shared a cell with the one animal he had always defined as The spirit animal of America.
For anyone not familiar with coyotes, they’re vicious canine like wildlings trapped somewhere below a wolf and above a fox. My friends and I used to go ‘catch yotes.’ We’d go into the woods, call out, imitate their yips. Secretly praying one didn’t came at us. It all amounted to nothing except hours in the dark Carolina forest.
This guy was clearly some sort of psychotic. But Joseph did manage, over the course of three days, to gain some of the coyotes trust. The yote even let Joseph give him a hug before he left. Here’s a picture of the two.
This story prompted me to create something All America, Cowboy undertones. Pack of coyotes going howling at the moon… So I made 10 lighters. Zippo matte black hand carved blood sweat tears. Enjoy the collection and shop fast, they sell out quick.
