As living aspects of our living world, acting as though we are separate from the larger living beings we serve to comprise is the basis of cancerousness. In fact, the equivalent is true for all forms of cancer at all scales, not only in the human body but in all lifeforms.
Cancer is what occurs when cells grow at the expense of a lifeform as a whole, instead of being in service to the whole1.
When considering the more historically consumerist and imperialist cultural behaviors of our species and comparing them with our indigenous cultural behaviors, it becomes easy to observe the differences between cancerous human behaviors and non cancerous human behaviors. This is because to be an indigenous culture means that a human society has grown with its environment, rather than over its environment2.
To know how to cure our cancerousness as a species, it helps to know how to cure cancer within ourselves as human beings. This is because cancer in the human body is a consequence of metabolic imbalances, which can be initiated or compounded by genetic mutations3. The illness that cancer causes occurs to the degree that a multicellular organism is destabilized by the behavior of its own cells.
Whereas healthy cells stop growing when receiving boundary signals from their neighbors, cancerous cells keep growing, creating an imbalance in size.
Whereas healthy cells are healed or die when damaged or reaching a terminal age, cancerous cells are not healed and/or continue growing beyond a terminal age, creating an imbalance in timing.
Whereas healthy cells adhere to the tissues they comprise, cancerous cells can detach and spread throughout the body, creating an imbalance in location.
Whereas healthy cells maintain shapes appropriate to the role they serve in the body, cancerous cells vary their shapes and sizes to serve themselves, creating an imbalance in topology.
Whereas healthy cells specialize as they mature, cancerous cells remain unspecialized and immature, creating an imbalance in functionality.
Whereas healthy cells work with the immune system, cancerous cells work against the immune system, creating an imbalance in immunity.
Whereas healthy cells only signal a need for increased resources to serve the body as a whole, cancerous cells only signal a need for increased resources to serve themselves, creating an imbalance in resource allocation.
In short, cancerous cells cause illness by destabilizing the dynamic equilibrium of the larger living beings they partially comprise.
The cure for cancer is not simply to eliminate cancerous cells but rather to facilitate metabolic dynamic equilibrium, both within cells and throughout the larger living beings comprised by those cells. Put simply, once a cell no longer behaves cancerously, it is no longer cancerous.
If a cell is no longer cancerous, it no longer needs to be eliminated from the larger living being that it partially comprises in order for that being to be well. Otherwise, it is healthier for the body if that cell is eliminated. As we are each the equivalent of cells in the bodies of larger living beings, to cure our cancerousness is to either be eliminated or to change our behavior to facilitate the metabolic dynamic equilibrium of both ourselves and our world.
The term “cells” here also applies to cell-like equivalents in larger living beings.
While indigenous cultures grow in a way that is integrated with their environment, so as to live indefinitely within their environment, cancerous cultures grow at the expense of their environment, enabling their demise due to the ensuing demise of their environment.
The equivalent of compounding genetic mutations at the scale of a human society is what we perceive as that society’s cultural development.
