From Humans-in-the-Loop to Simplified Regulations to Student Advocates, Meet Sonar’s Approach to Safe School-Supported AI

From early classroom computers to advanced web surfing to generative artificial intelligence, education professionals have long faced the reality that mixing adolescents and new technology carries both risks and rewards.

However, even for veteran administrators who have adapted to wave after wave of tech innovations, implementing school-supported AI feels like a new challenge entirely—especially when combined with issues as sensitive as youth mental health.

At Sonar, we believe that our role in supporting educators extends far beyond simply providing students with access to Sonny. We're committed to joining conversations with decision-makers across the education, psychology, and technology fields to:

Here's how Sonar is continually strengthening our commitment to providing safe and effective mental health support for students.

In March 2025, the mental health AI landscape reached a milestone: the first clinical trial of a therapy chatbot.

The study demonstrated promising benefits (like a 51% average reduction in depression symptoms and a 31% average reduction in anxiety symptoms), but it also flagged a key ingredient for effective care: always having a human, specifically one trained in mental health best practices, closely supervise the system.

Take it from Michael Heinz, the study’s first author and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Dartmouth’s Center for Technology and Behavioral Health:

"The development and clinical testing of these systems need to have rigorous benchmarks for safety, efficacy, and the tone of engagement, and need to include the close supervision and involvement of mental-health experts."

This recommendation validated the approach we developed from the onset of Sonar. Rather than operating as a standalone AI chatbot, Sonny has a human-in-the-loop methodology where a trained Wellbeing Companion—a real person working for Sonar—is involved in every conversation.

Like a co-pilot, our AI helps our team by suggesting appropriate responses, identifying concerning patterns, and ensuring consistent, supportive communication. This approach means Sonar can be scaled across entire school districts while keeping human expertise at the center of every interaction.

Adolescents communicate differently, often using slang or expressions that could be misinterpreted by AI systems that aren’t purpose-built for teens. A student saying "kill me" might simply be expressing frustration about an upcoming test, but without human context and judgment, an AI system could trigger inappropriate emergency protocols. Our Wellbeing Companions understand these nuances, ensuring responses are both contextually appropriate and emotionally intelligent.

When a student reaches out at 1 AM experiencing a panic attack, our human-supervised system provides immediate emotional support while assessing whether emergency intervention is needed. When friendship conflicts create social anxiety, our team helps students develop coping strategies and communication skills they can apply in their relationships.

Our approach recognizes that building human connection skills is fundamental to adolescent development. By incorporating a human touch, Sonny doesn't replace IRL relationships: it helps students develop the confidence and tools to strengthen their in-person connections with family, friends, and school counselors.

As it currently stands, America's youth data privacy landscape is a fragmented maze of conflicting requirements. HIPAA governs health information, FERPA covers educational records, COPPA regulates apps for children under 13, and regional rules like Illinois' HB 1806 mandates unique AI consent rules in therapy settings.

This patchwork forces startups and school systems to navigate overlapping, sector-specific rules across 50 different state laws. In practice, for example, COPPA mandates parental consent for collecting data from children under 13, but enforcement is inconsistent, and many apps bypass these rules entirely. Meanwhile, FERPA allows schools to share certain student information without parental consent unless parents opt out—a process many families are unaware of.

The end result? High compliance costs for schools and barriers to innovation in youth mental health technology.

But with chaos also comes a clear opportunity to modernize this system. The Sonar team believes these outdated laws should be consolidated into a unified federal framework specifically designed for the AI era.

In our view, new, AI-specific guidelines for school and mental health settings are the only way to mitigate the technology risks while maximizing its rewards:

  • Clearer Guidelines for Responsible AI Development: A modern framework would establish consistent rules for how youth data can be used to train AI systems, with clear guidelines on consent, transparency, and data de-identification.

  • Stronger Protection and Trust for Families: Parents currently struggle to understand when consent is required and how their children's data is used across different platforms and institutions. A unified law would provide transparency and consistency, giving families clear control over their children's information.

  • Reduced Costs: A single, clear standard would eliminate redundancies and simplify oversight, cutting compliance costs that currently exceed $100 billion annually. Startups and school systems could focus resources on developing better solutions rather than navigating contradictory legal requirements.

  • Accelerated Innovation in Youth Mental Health Technology: By replacing outdated, siloed laws with clear, AI-specific guardrails, a unified framework would enable faster deployment of innovations like mental health chatbots and early intervention systems. Rather than slowing progress with bureaucratic confusion, regulatory clarity would speed and improve development.

Thankfully, some of the work needed to make this future a reality is already underway. For example, Sonar is a proponent of Stanford's READI (Readiness Evaluation for AI-Mental Health Deployment and Implementation), which provides concrete guidelines for responsible AI development in mental health contexts.

Between emerging research and compliance complications, it’s easy to forget about one of the most important perspectives in the room: students themselves. That's why we launched the Sonar Changemakers program, which directly involves students in shaping mental health conversations and honing our platform’s approach.

The Changemakers program recognizes that students are the true experts on their own experiences. They understand the pressures of social media, the stress of college applications, and the complex dynamics of adolescent relationships in ways that adults—no matter how well-intentioned—simply cannot.

Through this program, students help de-stigmatize mental health conversations in their schools and communities. They share insights about what makes mental health support accessible and effective, and they advocate for policies that truly serve their generation's needs. This isn't just good practice: it's essential for developing AI tools that students will actually use and benefit from.

The future of AI in education depends on getting the balance right between innovation and protection, between efficiency and human connection, between technological capability and regulatory oversight.
