It Took Me 10 Years To Do This

For 10 long years I’ve shied away from Youtube. The landscape video, the longer format, the high quality video, the copyright claims . . . everything about it was so far outside my comfort zone that I just stuck to Instagram and TikTok.

Which in hindsight was ridiculous because Youtube was the platform that I consumed the most content on and enjoyed using the most. It felt more like TV than it did a social media platform and I was very aware that people on Youtube generally watch with a much higher level of intent.

Anyway, long story short, 10 years into this Somewhere Soul thing and I’ve finally uploaded my first Youtube video. It’s a single deck vinyl 45s mix that takes you through Bossa nova, Cinematic Soul, Psych Funk, Jazz Fusion, Middle Eastern Grooves, Neapolitan Funk and beyond!

I hope you enjoy! And as it’s my first foray into the world of Youtube, any likes, comments, shares, subscribes etc would be most appreciated!

Why single deck you ask? The short and not very interesting answer is that I don’t have a set of vinyl decks and I don’t have the space in my flat for them. I picked up this portable record player so that I could have something when I’m on the go and then realised it’d be a really simple way to record vinyl mixes for youtube. I also like that it puts the focus on the music.

Why 45s you ask? I’ve become a bit obsessed with them recently tbh. I love the size of them, I love the simplicity of one track on each side, I love that there’s less to choose from so it’s not quite so overwhelimg and also, maybe most importantly, the 45 section of record shops is always the most chilled. I won’t only record mixes with 45s but this is the first video of a series of 45-only mixes.

What’s next? Next up I’ve got a Spiritual Jazz mix on the way that will be part of a ‘mindful mornings’ series. I think I’ll record these mixes in bed which will serve as both a bit of a gimmick and also a convenient place to record away from my beautiful crazy daughters.

Btw, sorry for the radio silence, the latest addition to my family is just about to turn 2 months and it’s been a pretty wild ride so far! You’ll be hearing a lot more from me from now on in and I’ve got loads of wonderful records to share with you all as well as an update on my current Substack model for paid subcribers! Appreciate your patience! ❤️
