Famous
by Naomi Shihab Nye
The river is famous to the fish.
The loud voice is famous to silence,
which knew it would inherit the earth
before anybody said so.
The cat sleeping on the fence is famous to the birds
watching him from the birdhouse.
The tear is famous, briefly, to the cheek.
The idea you carry close to your bosom
is famous to your bosom.
The boot is famous to the earth,
more famous than the dress shoe,
which is famous only to floors.
The bent photograph is famous to the one who carries it
and not at all famous to the one who is pictured.
I want to be famous to shuffling men
who smile while crossing streets,
sticky children in grocery lines,
famous as the one who smiled back.
I want to be famous in the way a pulley is famous,
or a buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular,
but because it never forgot what it could do.

This song has been on repeat this week:

Some interesting Substack articles lately:

  • If you’re into Astrology, I found this article to be very insightful!

  • Stephenie G.’s Mother’s Day reflection on her family history:

  • I loved reading about the behind the scenes of Emma Roberts’s “mom shower”:

A practice I’ve started this week is taken from the book Manifest: 7 Steps to Living Your Best Life by Roxie Nafousi. Step 5 of her Manifesting model is “Gratitude Without Caveats” — and a practice she suggests is writing down all the good things that happened that day. (or if you can’t write it, think about it as you fall asleep.)

I’ve tried and failed many times to have a dedicated ~Gratitude Journal~, but for some reason reframing it as just “good things” is easier for me to think of and feels less daunting. I just keep a dedicated note in my phone and jot down a few things before I go to sleep. I’ve noticed it helps me end the day with a grateful heart!

Here are some recent “good things” I’ve made note of:

  • Figured out how to book a notary

  • Organized the bathroom drawer and it felt so good!

  • Saw my niece

  • It rained!

  • I made a successful sourdough loaf

  • We happened upon a Shakespeare grassroots play at the park

  • Fireworks grand finale

  • Sent out my first round of Something for Sundays mail club!

Thank you, thank you for reading Something for Sundays! If you enjoyed this post, please share with someone you know who might enjoy it too! ♥
