Carmen · The Social Social Club

Social Media Managers, Specialists, Directors, Content Creators, Freelancers, and Devotees to the Church of Our Algorithmic Lord. Hello. Welcome. You’ve come to the right place.

You might be new to working in social, running multiple commercial accounts agency-side, thriving in your portfolio-career-freelancing-era, or a seasoned-pro-elder-millennial heading into your 14th figurative rodeo. As long as you consume, produce, or appreciate the dopamine hits we call content — this newsletter is for you.

For our part, we’re a small but focused Marketing team (freshly doubled from 2 to 4!) here at Slate, who think and talk about social media — its inner workings and formulas, societal influences, technical mechanisms, economic impacts, emotional resonance, and ripple effects — constantly. You’ll hear from all of us as the newsletters ramp up.

Our goal with this space is twofold.

First up, we want to dig into what makes social content good. The trends that fill our feeds influence the way we live and work, increasingly so as time goes on, and we want to discuss these with you. We’ll be using this space to analyze why certain posts work, create unrest, divide communities, tap into nostalgia, or simply make us “feel some type of way”.

The second intention for this letter is to act as a hotline for social media-related questions big and small (and frantic, embarrassing, or rage-filled…) where you can write in and receive sound, pragmatic feedback from a diverse cast of characters who’ve been there and seen some shit. Each week we’ll tackle thorny questions that touch on working in social, and share them for everyone to read and learn from. The great, perhaps obvious, benefit to having 4 people on guard to answer questions, is that we cover a huge diversity of experience and perspective. Think of us like sage wizards, or protective aunties.

We can’t wait to shoot The Social Social Club into your inboxes each week.

Your brother and sisters in solidarity,

Eric, Christina X2, and Carmen
