Michael Wright, who is known for his career that spanned decades, passed away on August 19, 2026, at the age of 70. Wright was suffering from Marchiafava‑Bignami disease, and died due to heart failure and other complications due to the disease. The star was known for his roles in Streamers, The Principal, and The 5 Heartbeats, among other projects.

Streamers (as Carlyle)

Released in 1983, Streamers follows Roger, Richie, Billy, and Carlyle, four American men waiting to be shipped out to the Vietnam War. Since they come from different racial backgrounds, and one of them happens to be gay, it leads to them having uncomfortable and tense conversations that soon take a violent turn.

Moreover, since they are all inside a single barracks room, they have to tolerate one another, which causes more issues. Wright plays Carlyle, a short-tempered and angry man whose actions fuel the already violent situation. The film is streaming on Prime Video.

The 5 Heartbeats (as Eddie King Jr.)

The 5 Heartbeats, which was released in 1991, follows the rise and fall of a fictional 1960s band across three decades. The story is told from the point of view of the founding member, Donald Matthews. Michael Wright played the character of Eddie King Jr., the lead vocalist of the band whose life unravelled due to his addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Eddie's addiction and arrogance led to him eventually getting fired from the band. The film is available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

The Wanderers (as Clinton)

Released in 1979, The Wanderers follows an Italian-American youth gang of the same name as they face rival gangs, figure out their love lives, and cope with the end of their adolescence. Michael Wright plays the leader of the rival gang, the Del Bombers, named Clinton.

The Del Bombers and Wanderers eventually resolve their dispute as they figure out their personal issues as well. The film is available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

Sugar Hill (as Raynathan Skuggs)

Sugar Hill, which came out in 1994, follows Roemello Skuggs, a powerful drug lord in Harlem, who wants to leave the life of a criminal and start a clean life. This change comes in him after he falls in love with a woman named Melissa. Wright plays Raynathan Skuggs, Roemello's brother, who isn't too sure if they will be able to leave the criminal world behind.

Roemello's attempt to leave the criminal life behind causes issues between him and Raynathan. The brothers share a complicated relationship throughout the film, but Roemello eventually gets what he wants. The film is available for purchase on Apple TV.

The Interpreter (as Marcus)

The Interpreter (2005) follows the conspiracy behind the potential assassination of President Edmond Zuwanie. He is the controversial president of the fictional African nation, Matobo. When Silvia Broome, a United Nations translator, overhears a plan to assassinate Zuwanie, Secret Service agent Tobin Keller is assigned to protect him and investigate Silvia as well.

His investigation makes Sylvia a suspect to him since she herself has past connections to Matobo. Wright plays Marcus, a Matoban consular service member. The film is available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.
