I’ve always loved menswear. So much of my personal style comes from being inspired by stylish men. I love putting together outfits that mix tomboy + feminine styles. I think it’s important to ignore the labels or gendered categories and wear what you want, what makes you happy and what feels the most like you.
I’ve been marinating on this topic for a few weeks now. My ideas crystallised and confirmed what I’ve always known while the Wuthering Heights film press tour and outfit parade took over my algorithm. I found myself more interested in what Jacob Elordi was wearing over any look Margot Robbie adorned.
Of course, Margot is completely breathtaking in any setting she appears and the looks she stepped out in while promoting her film were impeccable and astutely researched thanks to her very talented stylist Andrew Mukamal. But her looks were more (fittingly) theatrical and I was more entertained than inspired.
(Sidenote: I really respect the research and meticulous thought behind the looks to match the film the actors are there to promote, but in all honestly, I’m a bit over the method dressing movement. Is that the only way to create a stir and get people to cinemas now?)
In between the premieres and press junkets - two of Margot’s airport outfits - had me (and the rest of the internet) in a chokehold. You know the ones:
Jacob’s outfits - while often connected to the Wuthering Heights universe - is where I found inspiration, whether it was through textural choices, colour pairings or specific cuts and fits. And it made me reflect on how he’s been dressing for years.
Looking to Jacob Elordi for style inspiration is nothing new to me (and likely many of you). The man knows how to dress. As much as I’m interested in how he presents himself on a red carpet, his every day streetstyle is where the magic happens. It’s the moments away from a stylist’s grasp that to me, tells the full story of his stylish essence.
His accessory game is unmatched - like, give me a bag tour ASAP!
The accessory formula:
cool sunglasses
a colourful, interesting bag - helps if designer/vintage
baseball caps
jewellery (helps that he has a Cartier partnership!)
excellent loafer and sneaker collection
a book - the boy is well read!
Sure, it’s not hard to make a lean, 6 foot 5 man look good but very few tall (or not tall), slim (or not slim) men slay this hard.
It’s not just Jacob’s style that has me in a spin; there’s many other boys that sartorially do it for me. A common thread that connects these boys style vibes - they nail the basics - they know good denim, tshirts, jackets. But the devil is in the details with fun colourful bags, a bandana, a lovely sock or great glasses. The extra bits are what elevate the entire look. I want to raid all their wardrobes immediately.
There’s JFK Jnr - whose style, now more than ever, is everywhere thanks to the success of Ryan Murphy’s TV show, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jnr & Carolyn Bessette. Quintessentially 90s, preppy, sporty chic, cheeky, corporate but with a youthful wink. He made riding a bicycle through the NYC streets with a backwards cap look so effortless.
Then there’s Harry Styles - who has fed me for YEARS with his fashion and is currently out and about a lot while he promotes his new album, ‘Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally.’ I just know Harry and Zoe dip in and out of each other’s wardrobes. They’re both so, so lucky.
Just the mere sight of Pedro Pascal puts a smile on my face. He makes me want to wear my glasses all the time.
Lewis Hamilton has won 7 Formula 1 world championships so he’s truly one of, if not the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time but I completely believe he’s as skilled in fashion and style as he is behind the wheel of an F1 racecar.
Who else is serving looks like this all year round? No one?! Every race weekend (there’s 24 this year!) he’s turning out looks Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You’ll find him wearing major household name brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta but also lesser-known (but very fashion IYKYK) designers like Willy Chavarria and Wales Bonner.
The silhouettes are where Lewis really stands out. From structured, avant-garde tops with baggy pants, sequins head-to-toe, to billowing vibrant jackets; Lewis is not afraid to make a statement.
I honestly don’t really know much about Aaron Levine apart from clocking his exceptional style. Some light research tells me he’s a menswear designer (this adds up!) and worked in house for a variety of American brands like Club Monaco and Abercrombie & Fitch. After leaving Abercrombie he’s consulted for brands like Vince, Madewell, and Aimé Leon Dore, before starting his own eponymous label, Aaron Levine NY.
Asap Rocky’s style is something special. He has a knack for mixing genres and influences in the most natural way.
When I conjure up an image in my mind of design genius, Jonathan Anderson - instantly I picture a navy knit and denim jeans. It seems to be his design uniform and I love that.
Of course, I’m always inspired by the girls too. I love the tomboy femme looks that Zoe Kravitz, Louisa Jacobson, Jennifer Lawrence, Alexa Chung, Dakota Johnson and Hailey Beiber - to name a handful - put together. But I think they deserve a separate substack of their own. So watch this space!
Just remember - we can all dress however, in whatever!
More Smooth Brain Thoughts,
Ali xx
