Early days of a very large commission that (mostly) fits on my wall in my studio. Blocking in colours, checking composition and trying to cover as much of the canvas as loosely as possible.
Someone once explained the 80:20 rule to me saying that 80% of the painting should be covered in 20% of the time, and then the final 20% should be 80% of the time… I find the switch from big brushes and loose paintwork to smaller brushes and more accurate line work always a bit challenging as it seems to coincide with the messy middle. (This is the point when the painting is mostly mid-tones, all the edges are rough and it looks like a toddler just scribbled on your work).
*The final stretched size doesn’t include the side bit that wraps along the second wall.
Painting at a larger scale than I’m used to always makes me marvel at those who always make large work. Don’t they get tired waving their arms around and standing up all day? What size studio do you need in order to feel confident with painting …
