my friends,
i want to quickly come here and tell you that i got into law school! they just sent me an email a couple of weeks ago along with some other information (when’s enrollment, what to bring, stuff like that).
i do feel it’s happening too quickly. i originally intended to enroll for next year’s classes. i planned to read law books for the remaining months of the year to at least have some legal stock knowledge. but since some forms of study requires a formal setting and fair competition with fellow classmates, i concluded that give-or-take 6 months would be too long a time to be reading law books alone. i might just get it better with a group.
my law school before designed its curricula for students to become lawyers. nothing more. there’s a subtle difference if your aim is to become a lawyer versus studying the law. with the former, it didn’t allow me to explore, didn’t allow me to think beyond what was asked. in other words, it wasn’t the type of learning i wanted. the advantage to this school is that one can approach studying law like an academic, to flit in and out of school when needed, delve deep to the complexities of law, and come back to the institution refreshed. it’s also fair towards working students, allowing us to select subjects that blends perfectly with our work and home realities. my first impressions were so far so good with this one.
a few friends have asked about my interview and honestly it wasn’t worth a post. we waited in a moot court room, waiting for an entire rainy afternoon, waiting for our names to be called until finally we talked with two professors. i don’t think it reached five minutes. we exchanged the usual pleasantries, they tickled my mind with my opinions on divorce, we said goodbye.
the first sense of competition appeared when upon receiving our acceptance e-mails, the law department also posted the top 10 freshman qualifiers. did i get jealous my name wasn’t on the list? initially yes. the feeling disappeared as soon as it arrived when i heard my friend, who got 10th place, cringed when she received dozens of congratulations via facebook. so far i have retained my anonymity and i intend to keep it that way for as long as i can.
the law school department was in full effect this week serving the enrollees of all year levels. mostly they made the first years wait while they gave priority to the sophomores, juniors and seniors. a classic initiation towards the freshies but we put our head down, smiled and remained humbled.
a little wish came true when one of the coordinators wrote my section (1B) on my application form. the first section class never tempted me. i don’t need all that pressure, the expectations etc. in fact, i plan to be an irregular student if i want to study the way i want, focusing on subjects more than others to fully grasp on its lessons, surrendering a term to ruminate of what i have learned so far. for me, that’s the way to go.
as with all groups of people facing the unknown, rumors and unsolicited pieces of advice began swarming around like flies: don’t make enemies with this one who’s the unofficial dean of law school; this attorney is only interested in teaching the first section who, word on street are saying, are topnotchers from their respective schools; this school is harsh towards the freshmen but it gets better with time.
the freshmen don’t get a say with fixing their schedules, at least not on the first term. all of us got the usual subjects: Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Persons and Family Relations Law, Legal Ethics, Philosophy of Law, Statutory Construction and, for me the main reason for applying to this school because it serves, Islamic Jurisprudence!
everything is done now save for the ID. i only have three books left to buy. expensive but i’ll buy them. i’m lightly reading the books i have. i have 10 days to prepare mentally and spiritually.
four years of grit. here we go!
help me buy my remaining books!
kindly consider donating :) here
thank you! all the best ~
