Other Systems • Re: C64 Doom

That generally refers to the cracker group, its just how it works. Credits for the actual game are usually inside the crack (in the intro) Statistics: Posted by groepaz — Fri Aug 21, 2026 7:14 am

Other Systems • Re: C64 Doom

The "released by" and "released at" up top is really misleading. Statistics: Posted by Kweepa — Fri Aug 21, 2026 6:48 am

Other Systems • Re: C64 Doom

I release most of this stuff as open source, so Ive been ok with the CSDB "hacks", its sort of part of the fun/history, and usually they mention the author . But this was posted today without credit: https://csdb.dk/release/?id=263871 tokra, maybe you could add a comment to that with the itch link, which has a free download of source option? https://orac81.itch.io/tfreax I get the idea you have…

Looks good - you have a lot of game on there, I will have to find some time to try them out. Thanks. Statistics: Posted by Vic20-Ian — Fri Aug 21, 2026 6:15 am

Emulation and Cross Development • Re: 8bit Pixel Lab - a character bitmap and tilemap utility

Pretty cool! Have you tried the included converter by Mike from the download-package? This takes some time to find the best colour combinations, but the results speak for themselves I think. Not sure how this could be included in your browser tool, since it's just a compiled Windows executable. I don't have any source code to see what is doing, but I've given the user lots of sliders and a live…

Emulation and Cross Development • Re: 8bit Pixel Lab - a character bitmap and tilemap utility

Had an idea for how the editing should work, a cross between what I've done for C64 bitmap mode, multi-colour char mode, and the Acorn Electron editor. I have added 'reference' slices down the left, but essentially give you four pens to draw with. You set the colour to use for each type of pen and when you hover over the canvas, before start drawing, you see the effect of the pen as a preview. EG:…

Games • Re: Large sprite / Glyph count games

How about Shamus? Lots of enemies and bullets flying around. Quick too. I'm about to complete a disassembly of it (with some - ok a lot) of AI assistance. I can put that on github and share if of interest? Yes, quite an unsual one with the overlaid enemies. Thanks. Statistics: Posted by Vic20-Ian — Thu Aug 20, 2026 3:41 pm

Games • TFreax, a new Vic20 game. (3k) (OI)

TFREAX is a fast paced shoot-em up, adding new twists to a familiar theme. There are versions for the C64, C16, Vic20, Atari 400/800, ZX Spectrum, MSDOS, or Windows/Linux via SDL. The Vic20 version is just 3k! Download: https://github.com/orac81/miniapples/ra ... latest.zip The executables are in the "tfreax" sub-folder. Controls (or use Joystick): SHIFT = Fire. I,P = Move Left/Right. X = Quit…

Other Systems • Re: C64 Doom

There's something mixed up in their heads if they wish to erase credit for the original source they have stolen from and claim a victory over 'the man' for cracking (lol) and putting a recycled scroller on it. Some of us have grown up and enjoyed human experiences I guess. And I'm sure most of the people there have their heads screwed on the right way and are decent people, but shame it is the way…

Emulation and Cross Development • Re: Retro Graphics Lab - a character bitmap and tilemap utility

Added some support for mode 1 and 2 on the Acorn Electron, and now I'm going to return to the Vic features and look at HFLI and if I can add a mode to support that. Statistics: Posted by AndyH — Thu Aug 20, 2026 7:20 am

Emulation and Cross Development • Re: Retro Graphics Lab - a character bitmap and tilemap utility

It depends is the answer. If you throw a complex set of levels at it, the meta tile analysis won't give you any better results, and won't give any advantage after compression. If you design with tile patterns in mind, this feature will help keep you on track and you can get a 400 tilemap down to 100 before compression, with a dictionary of tiles on top. The 100 bytes will still compress down and…

Emulation and Cross Development • Re: VIC-20 core for the Mega65

I doubt the C64U will ever get alternative cores... the system isn't really designed for that (starting alternative cores that is) Statistics: Posted by groepaz — Thu Aug 20, 2026 5:00 am

Emulation and Cross Development • Re: VICE "Smart Attach"

The logic was actually a bit buggy - you can try a development build, it should work better now (also in non default config) Statistics: Posted by groepaz — Thu Aug 20, 2026 4:58 am

Other Systems • Re: C64 Doom

So csdb told me to bugger off, essentially. Then the day I released Wolf64, two "groups" released hacked versions with flashy loaders and scrolling messages. One was called "Wolf preview" and the other's scrolling message said the game was buggy. Neither credited me in the csdb entries. I don't think there's even an option to credit people that aren't csdb members? I mentioned these to the guy who…

Other Systems • Re: C64 Doom

The patch was on the next page, and by you, explaining how it made the code run at 30k pix/sec. I'd rather say what I explained there had been a blue print in the sense how the loop body needs to be restructured to get from 20K/s to 30K/s. That hints at a slightly more involved setup routine (exchanging INY/DEY where necessary, exchanging the bit-op opcodes and possibly also their operands when…

Games • Re: Knight Lore RELEASE

My naive idea was to try convert ZX Spectrum game to the VIC 20, as both computers have no sprites, smooth scroll or bitmap modes. There are already 2 games converted: Lala Prologue and Tenebra Macabre. There are also : Robots Rumble and Zombie Calavera Prologue see --> http://majikeyric.free.fr/ There are 2 other projects but they are on hold : Little Fish Big Tale and Sir Ababol DX...…
