I love to put niche or seemingly trivial things under an analytical microscope. There were so many things that I didn’t get to include in last month’s essay, including tangents about digital souls, statue boobs, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and a really good article about how mourning went from collective, to individual, to collective again with the internet.
In these BTS videos, I’ll show you how the sausages get made. We’ll talk about how I got the idea for my last essay, how I researched it and how I organised that research into an essay. I’ve pasted my research notes below, but in the video I talk you through them in a way that’s hopefully as insightful as it is silly. Research notes and reading recs below!
You’ll see some signs that I’m not super comfortable on camera, such as the fact that I start the video speaking with a hostage tape cadence. I kept reminding myself that this BTS is only even visible for a few of you (although anyone can watch 5 mins of it, eek), which helped me to relax. By the end of it, I looked exactly like this rat:
Disclaimer: I brought up the fact that my flat was being investigated for ghosts (not by me) but I didn’t want to lose my thread so I promised to address it later. Did I address it later? No. But if you want to know about the ghost situation, then I guess let me know…?
