Sir Ken Robinson Foundation · Sir Ken Robinson Foundation's Substack

“All the months are crude experiments, out of which the perfect September is made"

Virginia Woolf

There is something special about September. I know I’m not alone in feeling it often seems more like the start of a new year than January does. The impact of the academic calendar lingers well beyond when many of us left school - sharpened pencils, new shoes, fresh notebooks.

Endings and beginnings go hand in hand, but at this time of year it’s impossible to see one without the other: the end of summer, the start of a new school year; nights drawing in, intentions set; leaves falling, Halloween decorations up.

Summer is charming, sure. Autumn is magical.

It’s hard to believe we’re already half way through September, but perhaps that's fitting - time moves differently when we're paying attention to beginnings. Below is what’s ahead for the next few weeks and how you can get involved.

We’re very excited to share a special retreat coming up in early October. Inspired by the Element, and hosted by SKR’s wife and longtime partner in all things, Thérèse Robinson.

A 5 day interior design retreat in Gascony, inspired by The Element and hosted by Lady Thérèse Robinson with renowned designer Miv Watts.

Only one space left

Delve into what ‘home’ means for you. Be in your element, inspired by visits to chateaux, vintage markets, ateliers, and artisan studios. Share in candlelit dinners with locally sourced food and wine. Join in workshops that spark your creativity. Be inspired to continue your own story.

Enjoy five full days where you are being guided and nurtured in a home that echoes warmth and laughter, where chickens lay your morning eggs, and at night you sleep soundly in the stillness of the Gascony countryside. Meet other guests who are passionate about colour and texture, travel and heritage. Share stories, exchange ideas.

You’ll leave the retreat rested, with a clear sense of your design aesthetic, and a renewed passion for your home, ready to create spaces that reflect your authentic self.

This month we’ll be looking at the talk notes from Sir Ken’s sessions at the 2009 Peace Summit with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and I’ll be sharing some memories from the event.

Note: The Sir Ken Robinson Archive features are for paid subscribers only. We share never before seen artefacts, as well as insights into these, and honest reflections on the process of establishing an archive of this caliber. As a small, family run Foundation we depend on donations and subscriptions like these to continue our work. If you would like to support the Sir Ken Robinson Foundation, including the development of the Archive, please consider becoming a paid subscriber.

As the leaves begin their slow turn and the light shifts golden, September reminds us that every ending contains the seed of something new. The Sir Ken Robinson Foundation exists to nurture those seeds into creative sparks.

Whether through retreats in the French countryside, virtual gatherings of creative minds, or the preservation of SKR’s legacy in the Archive, we're here to support your own journey of discovery. After all, in the words of SKR himself, finding your passion really can change everything.

We’re a very small, family run foundation. Only a handful of people can afford to work for free in this world, and unfortunately we aren’t them! The Sir Ken Robinson Foundation is a passion project, not a money making machine, and we are dependent upon donations and subscriptions like this one to keep going. We feel it would be both a tragedy and a huge disservice to put this archive in storage and let it get dusty, so we’re committed to establishing it fully and, one day, being able to share it with the world in a way that is as open source as possible. We can only do that with support from people like you. All of the subscriptions go directly to project overheads, like keeping the archive boxes kept in a safe environment.

We know it isn’t possible for everyone to pay a subscription cost, and we’re so glad you’re here in any capacity - it’s the people who make this movement so special and, in particular, who keep this mission and legacy alive. You can show your support for free by hitting the heart button below and sharing our posts with your own communities if they resonate with you.
