There in the bar and all from
the same school, some with fresh
sorrows and all with skin
that is now so lived in,
we stood around in that way
people do when comfortable
but not wanting to get
too comfortable. We raised a glass
a few times in a row,
said the things you say. Nods to work
and family, and a bunch of stories
that went all the way back.
The only exaggeration was
the trick the clock had played.
We all said we’d do it again
and much sooner, but when you need
a wheelbarrow for the candles
on the cake, you know the next time
we all see each other, one
will be missing, and that’ll be
the reason for the gathering.
