Writing this blog takes a lot of research behind the scenes. I’m working on a longer improv article, but I opened up Jill Bernard’s Small Cute Book of Improv to see if Jill had any wisdom to impart. This is page 8:
It felt appropriate for this week.
I don’t have anything profound to say, but let me offer my encouragement and my thanks to the Minnesotans who protested this weekend and are protesting now. Minnesotans braved the -20-degree weather to march against tyranny, facing real danger. It takes incredible courage, and it sets the template for the rest of us. Thank you.
If you are disappointed that an improv blog is addressing politics, then feel free to unsubscribe. All art is political, and improv is no exception. I remember attending a workshop taught by another Minnesota improviser, John Gebratatose, who made an excellent case for why improv shouldn’t avoid hard topics, but rather lean into them with our art. I’ve been thinking about that a lot.

The Collective Care Fund is run by an improv group called Canned Laughter, and they’re paying people’s rent who are scared to go out to work. donate here
