Hey all.
This week I had a chat with db Burkeman, the longtime figure of importance in downtown NYC culture. db was a DJ, record label owner, proprietor of record store Breakbeat Science and BBlessing, the seminal boutique on Orchard Street, an art collector of note, and a general culture enthusiast of great repute.
More than that, he is just a really nice dude whose endless curiosity and continuous involvement in the kind of culture that matters to me is pretty admirable.
db and I were introduced earlier this year by Camella Ehlke, [SIC] Talks alum and mutual friend of ours, and we hit it off straight away. Turns out he was aware of my work at [SIC], which surprised me but flattered at the same time.
Calling in from London, DB and I talked about physical objects in a digital age, the pleasures of cultural rabbit holes, his forthcoming Illegal Rave Flyers of the ’90s, and why the best books don’t need a coffee table.
Stuff I would have talked to DB about if [SIC] Talks wasn’t a 30 minute show:
How a Cancelled Fugazi x Vans Collab Led to $5 USD Shoes. I love this. Despite backlash from punk band Fugazi and the partnership’s termination, the streetwear brand took the roll out into its own hands this week.
More DIY or die: Julia Fox is directing a feature film in the city and is casting authentic New Yorkers as background actors.
Which dovetails into [SIC] Talks alum Cheryl Dunn talking photographing NYC and the people who make the city what it is (video)
On the topic of artists making it work: The Year I Almost Gave Up Being an Artist Only a tiny percentage of people making art ever earn enough money to live solely from their practice.
Apropos of that: Dean Millien’s Aluminum-Foil Animal World. A highlight of the Greater New York show at PS1 for me.
So - enjoy. More links after the interview, too.
