Way back in 1999, I was branching out in the entertainment industry, looking for properties I could develop as either films or TV shows. There were a lot of intellectual properties (I.P.’s) that I was toying with. One was a game that I had come across at that year’s book expo. The game was called Wadjet. It had an ancient Egyptian theme, and was brilliantly designed, both visually, and in terms of game play – in fact it had won a whole bunch of game design awards.
The games creator, Dee Pomerleau, was a charming woman from Vermont. Wadjet, and her second game Palenque, were her brain-children, and she had a booth at every book and game conference promoting them. I had asked her if I could develop the game into a TV series. I felt it had a fun Indiana Jones vibe that would definitely find an audience.
I remember we met at the rotating rooftop restaurant atop the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan to discuss it, and she gave me her blessing to create a TV proposal. I put a lot of work into the proposal. I wanted to make it as gorgeous as the game. All the graphics in the proposal come from the game.
I had shopped it to quite a few producers and studios, and although we had some real interest, ultimately we couldn’t get it off the ground. I still love the proposal though. I had thought that I might want to develop it as a middle-grade book series, but never pursued it. Here’s the proposal for the TV series, along with an outline for all the episodes in the first season. I hope you enjoy this “lost world” of Egyptian lore!
