Education Is Changing. Are We Asking the Right Questions?

When most people hear “Teach For America,” they think this conversation will be about recruiting teachers.

It wasn’t.

My conversation with Julie Gronquist quickly became something much broader: what does it actually mean to prepare students for the future?

We talked about how the definition of educational success has changed. For years, the conversation centered on academic achievement and college acceptance. Those goals still matter, but today’s students are entering a world that values adaptability, communication, critical thinking, and lifelong learning alongside traditional academics.

We also discussed one of the biggest challenges facing education today: burnout.

I asked Julie whether we’ve unintentionally created a profession that invites burnout. Her answer wasn’t to blame teachers. Instead, she described how teaching has become increasingly complex and emotionally demanding, making community, support, and sustainable working environments more important than ever.

The conversation eventually turned to artificial intelligence.

Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for teachers, Julie offered a perspective I found compelling. If AI can reduce paperwork, streamline routine tasks, and help educators work more efficiently, it has the potential to create something teachers desperately need: more time for meaningful relationships with students.

That may be one of the biggest opportunities AI presents—not replacing human connection, but creating more space for it.

One theme kept resurfacing throughout our discussion: education has always evolved, but the pace of change is accelerating. The challenge isn’t simply keeping up with new technology or new career pathways. It’s ensuring that schools continue preparing students for lives that none of us can fully predict.
