Over the next four weeks we’re going to do something most artists never do. We’re going to stop trying to fit into the art world and start figuring out which art world actually fits you.
Because here’s the thing nobody tells you. There isn’t one art world. There are many. And they barely overlap. The rules of the fine art gallery world don’t apply to the plein air world. The community-based art world runs completely differently from the auction house world. What gets you into a museum show won’t get you into a street art festival. What works for a fiber artist won’t work for a painter chasing gallery representation.
Most artists spend years trying to navigate a map that doesn’t match the territory they’re actually in. Or trying to be in six different territories at once and wondering why they feel scattered and exhausted and like nothing is working.
