Welcome to another issue of The Shit List, the premium newsletter from the writers of Shit Towns of Australia and Shit Holidays. This week, we review Ancient Greece and give our take on the new Christopher Nolan blockbuster The Odyssey.
Responsible for some of humanity’s most painful inventions including philosophy, theatre and anal sex, Ancient Greece is considered ‘the cradle of Western civilisation’ in the same way that Wuhan is the cradle of coronavirus or your mum is the cradle of super AIDS.
Despite this saccharine sobriquet, Ancient Greece was actually just a collection of dusty, sunbaked rockpiles populated entirely by aggressive, bedsheet-wearing grifters who loved nothing more than starting fights with their neighbours, whipping their willies out in public and shouting about geometry. There’s a dude on my street who does all those things and he doesn’t get lauded like some kind of genius.
