Summer has never been my favorite season to dress for, but after much trial and error I've sorted out a simple summer capsule that's versatile enough for travel. I've been slowly building this capsule over many years — adding one or two pieces a season at most, only when something genuinely needs replacing or I've identified a real gap.
Here are the 10 core pieces I plan to mix and match with, and wear on repeat, all summer long. I've included links to some of my favorites (or similar) but I'm guessing you might already own many of them?
For very hot days and humid climates, nothing beats a maxi dress. I own a few paper-thin, white vintage dresses (similar here and here) that I love to wear with classic Vans or Converse. This could easily be my entire summer uniform.
This just in: an oversized button-up (or down?) goes a long way. You can wear it over a swimsuit, throw it over your shoulders, tie it around your waist, pair it with denim or shorts or linen pants - the list goes on and on. I love the monochromatic look of a classic white tee paired with white denim (or track pant or light trouser). Always feels crisp and fresh. I’ve been wearing this one on repeat and love that it’s sustainably made.
Annoying to keep clean, yes, but a classic summer staple, also yes. Pair with a classic white tee, favorite button down, or light blouse. I like these and these.
Since my wardrobe is so casual, I am always looking for simple ways to elevate - a slouchy trouser pant (versus jeans) feels like just the ticket, especially for summer. Super chic with a white tee or tank - the ultimate travel staple. This is the one item I still need to buy, so please share recs if you have them. Eyeing these and these, but probably too casual?
I wear white blouses neary every day of the year, but they are especially relevant in the summer months, typically paired with light jeans and sandals (I don’t wear shorts or skirts). Mine are all thin cotton which means no ironing and super compact for packing. A few go-to favorites linked here and here and here. I often source mine gently used via The Real Real.
I just donated all my sweaters with the exception of one lightweight cashmere crewneck that I love to cozy up with on planes, or drape around my shoulders on cooler evenings. My stylish friend Naomi also swears by this classic rollneck sweater that has garnered quite the cult-following.
I can’t mess around with sun damage anymore and practically live in a sunhat at all times. This is a good one to throw in your beach bag, this one won’t fly off your head, and this chic visor can be rolled up for compact packing.
I’ve shared how I only own a few signature bags (small, medium, and one large leather work tote), but I’ve realized I do need a good summer tote - something that works for beach days, road trips, picnics, and travel. This oversized raffia tote is my pick for a chic all-purpose summer bag - bonus points for the leather straps you can tuck your sun hat into.
When it comes to swimsuits I like to invest in one classic suit that fits me like a glove and wear it into the ground (versus my teenagers who can fill an entire drawer with their bikini collection - help, I’ve failed). This black one-piece is a great year round staple.
I'm packing my carry-on for my annual sibling trip with my brother Max (we leave for London this weekend), determined to pack lighter than ever. Aside from the staples listed here, I'll bring a few cotton tanks, a light sleep set, workout clothing, socks and underwear, a book, my passport, my ride-or-die toiletry case with a mini pharmacy, international travel adapters, and a portable charger.
