Sheril Kirshenbaum · Unelected Representative

Amid heightened debate about science and research funding, I’m getting a lot of questions about my research.

Scientists often assume the main challenge in policymaking is ensuring that legislators have access to high-quality evidence. But Capitol Hill is fast-paced, resource-constrained, and shaped by competing considerations.

My work examines where senior congressional staffers turn for science-related information, and what shapes which sources they value. Spoiler: It’s not often academia, think tanks, or NGOs, and who they trust reveals a lot about how science enters the policy process.

If you’re interested in diving into the full analysis, the dissertation is here.
