August Free Write 2026

August is my free write month.

Daily is the goal. Sit with my thoughts or prompts or challenges and get something on the page.

Write.

My only rule: no editing.

Editing bogs down the flow not only of words, but of potentially linked stories written as a result of the flow.

Thirty minutes daily brings the potential of thirty-one stories by the end of August. I’ve learned to keep the writing time short. Any longer than thirty minutes, I find myself in love with my words and convince myself I could follow my rule of no editing during August because my free flow words are so gorgeously masterful, these bad boys need no editing, absolutely none, Sheree, submit these words NOW.

Let the words sit. Percolate. Patience..

This is my third self-imposed August free write. Currently, I have several works from August 2024/2025 on submission now. Eight have been published, a pair are scheduled. The remaining fifty or so free writes, I’ve edited and edited and edited and basically need Indiana Jones to turn the key to reveal the inner workings of what I’m obviously missing.

It’s a good problem for a writer, a stockpile of work to have on hand.

August is a long month. I’m not writing rainbows every day. Often, I ask myself why not make the constraint two weeks, why the entire month? Come on, why do this to yourself, my lazy brain whispers. Stop, it’s summer …

Keep going. Ditch the time limit. Look out a window. Write what you see. Draw what you see.
