The Royal Rota can take something mildly interesting, such as the King and Queen living most weekends separately, and completely smother it with syrup!
In the Daily Mail exclusive, we were fed soothing anecdotes of dogs barking, horses clip-clopping, Charles “pottering” at Highgrove and Camilla “decompressing”.
It’s like a soothing bedtime story for Monarchists delivered by nanny.
My objection is that they aren’t reporting but rather mood-managing.
The question raised by the Palace Confidential Viewers was a legitimate one
“Why do Charles and Camilla spend so many weekends apart”
A legitimate question; it touches the Monarchy, the marriage and the public role of the sovereign.
However, it wasn’t treated as such; instead, we got PR spin that wasn’t analysis but rather emotional babysitting.
Ray Mill is presented as Camilla’s sanctuary, where the Queen hosts her grandchildren, decompresses, and lives her “real life”. Meanwhile, King Charles is pottering around Highgrove “dry Stone walling”. It’s all designed to make the King look quite quaint and harmless rather than powerfully and structurally significant.
Spin, not journalism.
And my point isn’t to take aim at anyone but rather rebel against a press ecosystem that refuses to treat the monarchy as an institution worthy of adult analysis.
The rota’s job is clearly not to report but to maintain the emotional stability around the Royal story, and that’s why when we find anything objectively curious or interesting and, may I say, institutionally relevant, it is quickly laundered into a warm bath of sycophantic nonsense.
