It’s not often that entire eras pass while you’re actively living them, but that’s just what happened to me this week when I dropped my youngest off at college. I’m still wrapping my head around the concept of a changed relationship dynamic with my children. I’m no longer going to know about the minutia of their everyday lives. Which, when you’ve immersed yourself in exactly that for 18 years, is a pretty jarring change.
I don’t have any pithy discoveries on this to share because I haven’t written about it yet. Writing is how I process. I know that’s not true for everyone, but I do firmly believe that everyone should at least try it. Giving yourself permission to communicate uncensored is one of the best and most generous gifts you can give yourself. Too many of us have that voice in our head that wins out most of the time - no one wants to hear that; you can’t say that; that’s already been said 1,000 different ways. Stuffing a sock in its mouth while you free associate on a blank piece of paper—downright magical things happen. Try it this weekend about something that’s been nagging at you. And I’ll let you know what revelations I uncover about this new era of my life.
Stay fierce,
Carla

Fall shows from female artists
Talk about inspiration. When you find yourself searching for the muse, pull up this piece on how six female artists prepared their fall exhibitions. Bonus: they’re all wearing fabulous outfits.
“Because pretending you know what will happen is a worn-out excuse for not participating in determining what will happen.”
Rebecca Solnit, in a most excellent piece that we should all bookmark to read when we’re feeling defeated.
