The word “journey” has the perfect meaning of what we are doing with Project Universe, and it feels so good to share all of the work and development with this project. If you aren’t familiar with Project Universe and its journey, please catch up here:
One thing about me is that I love a good crossover, and I know that a universe isn’t complete without their contribution. As a young TV lover, my favorite thing was watching Disney Channel crossovers like That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana (2007) and Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana (2009), but I always wanted to see universal crossovers like Marvel or DC that are rooted in reality instead of fantasy.
Today we have a couple that I will always mention (Power Universe and Yellowstone Universe) because they are holding down the fort in reality-based universes. Both universes inspired me to create my own version, but here’s the thing: they didn’t come with a rulebook. I have to learn this shit brick by brick and use all of my skills to bring this universe to life. With that being said, I want to share some of my ways of creating a universe. Most people think you can just start with a story and the universe will appear, and if that’s the case for you, by all means do you, but this ain’t that. This is my crossover blueprint:
This work takes time, discipline, and emotional labor. The breakdowns you read here — from character autopsies to power dynamics templates — are the same level of thinking I apply inside writers’ rooms and development spaces.
