About a year ago, the local paper in Homer published an article about Charlie Kirk’s death and included some slanderous language about the man. The language was in poor taste, and local Representative Sarah Vance asked the publisher for a correction, which they made. This set off a firestorm of anger from the local lefties here in Alaska, but there is a funny thing about liberals: they only get upset when it is their ox getting gored, and don’t hold the same sense of outrage when a conservative gets the same treatment.
This is illustrated by an act of real censorship that happened a couple of days ago to an author for the Seattle Times, and you didn’t hear any mention of the story in the local press. Matt Calkins is the name of the writer who was censored. He submitted an article about the controversial but newsworthy subject of men playing in the WNBA, but his paper refused to publish it.
If you aren’t a fan of the women’s professional basketball league, and not many people are, there is an interesting story going on right now about whether biological men, calling themselves transgender women, should be allowed to play in their league.
Yes, you read that correctly; the WNBA can’t decide if men should play in a women’s sports league. When the subject came up, one brave woman, a star player for the Indiana Fever named Sophie Cunningham, said that, in her opinion, only biological women should be allowed to play in the WNBA. She went on to say that she bears no malice against transgender women and thinks transgender individuals should be treated with respect, but doesn’t think that men should play sports against women.
It looked like Cunningham tried to find balance on the issue, but not to the liberal partisans who run the WNBA. To the woke league she plays for, Cunningham dared to speak out against a liberal icon and had to be put back in her place. Cunningham’s Coach wore a shirt at games supporting transgender women. When a mother and daughter attended a game wearing T-shirts with the letters XX/XY on them, they were punished. To transgender individuals, those letters are considered transphobic or exclusionary, and security personnel at the game forced the two fans to remove the shirts.
Things got so crazy that league Commissioner Cathy Engelbert held an emergency league meeting to try to settle the issue, but they couldn’t come up with a policy on how to address men playing in their league. Engelbert did send a strongly worded letter to all the teams saying, essentially, the league had no position for now but promised to come up with an answer at some point in the future.
Sometimes no answer is an answer, and to call the WNBA’s bluff, two retired male professional basketball players, Enes Kanter and Royce White, have declared themselves to now be transgender women and plan to be in the 2027 WNBA draft.
Obviously, the WNBA’s hypocrisy has been exposed. This league was formed in the spirit of Title IX to give women equal opportunities in athletics. The league doesn’t really want to come out and say that Cunningham was right, but at the same time, if they allow professional male athletes to join their league, it will take playing opportunities away from deserving women. This will make a mockery of the league and demonstrate their inability to stand up for women athletes.
Since Seattle has a WNBA team, this is a story that impacts their community. You would think the editors at the Seattle Times would want to cover the issue. However, when Mr. Calkins wrote about it, the Times wanted nothing to do with this issue. They buried the story, refusing to print it, and when Calkins turned in several different articles on similar subjects, all were rejected by the paper. The Seattle Times was not interested in any story that might threaten the worldview of its liberal readership in Seattle.
When faced with the very real censorship from his paper’s editors, writer Calkins felt that he had no option other than to quit his job at the paper and did so last Thursday.
The Seattle Times story is an example of real censorship of the press, not the imagined kind we had in Homer. However, neither the Anchorage Daily News, the Homer News, nor the new Homer Independent Press has written any stories at all about Mr. Calkins or the subject of actual censorship in the media. Evidently, to liberals, censorship is only important when it can be weaponized to attack Republicans, like it was used to attack Homer’s Representative Sarah Vance. That tells you all you need to know about the liberal mainstream media in Alaska and their agenda.
