Seashell people are a certain kind of person. I consider myself one of them. I have multiple friends with whom I text shell imagery back and forth – shell-encrusted grottos, shell wedding cakes, shell embroidery, etc (this was the latest) — many of which wind up on this Pinterest board devoted to shells. I like to think we’re part mermaid. We consider collecting shells on the beach our relaxation activity on vacation. We love anything with shells in it and find ways to bring shells into our day-to-day life, on our bodies and in our homes.
Why are we so obsessed? Shells might be one of the most stunning things created by nature for one. They translate into timeless design – whether it’s actual shells turned into objects or shell-inspired motifs. But I think the biggest reason is that shells bring a touch of whimsy to our world, and we could all use more of that.

You don't need to live by the sea to decorate with shells. Their natural beauty has inspired some of the most elegant objects and art across centuries — from Baroque chandeliers to silverware to wallpaper. A reminder of coastal holidays, yes, but also just genuinely beautiful things that belong in any home.
