Diane Arbus, “Girl in her circus costume” in Maryland, 1970.

It is so pretty and calm here. Rabbits and pheasants and chipmunks alternately appear and disappear on the front lawn in front of me and I am learning such serenity… Once in a while I feel a vague anxiety about what is happening around where I am supposed to be but then I remember that I am ‘not supposed to have any responsibilities.’ So I look once more out upon the lawn and see who is chasing whom and hope for the best."

—Diane Arbus, in a letter to Carlotta Marshall
