As we close submissions, we begin our event-planning phase. Scribendi has been part of at least one event each week in October, except the week of fall break.
After our grand push for submissions, we are happy to announce some of our statistics!
Overall, we got a total of 333 wonderful submissions, most of which came as a final wave towards the deadline. 333 is, in fact, the angel number for creativity, which has to be a good sign. (Unless I just jinxed it, in which case: Oops.) We appreciate each and every one of those—we now have a great amount to sort through to create an amazing magazine this year!
We’ve just begun to get into the meat of reviewing, so bear with us for the results. Scribendi takes pride in carefully assessing all works sent to us!
Our silent auction at Homecoming was a blast. There were some tight races and negotiations for many items. Pottery was popular, with multiple bets placed on every ceramic piece. The highest-selling item was the New Mexico Philharmonic gift certificate.
We raised an estimated $1355 through both our drawing and auction. Many thanks to our alumni who came to support UNM and Scribendi. We love you!
During this event, we also learned Scribendi’s most recent edition won the Associate Collegiate Press’ Pacemaker award! Scribendi has been nominated eight times, but this is our fourth win and the first since 2022.
Past editor, Tru Calabaza, tells us, “It’s such an honor to see Volume 39 of Scribendi being recognized. My favorite part of the magazine process was working with such a creative team and, of course, getting to read through all the amazing submissions we received,” which is great news, seeing as current staff is reading submissions now.
Conceptions Southwest invited us to their Open Mic event on Friday, the 24th! Our staff had a great time supporting our sister publication and seeing all the wonderful performers.
As our activity for Honors Week, Scribendi held our own very spooky Open Mic. We went hard on the Halloween decorations, complete with large spiders and “blood” vials, transforming the Honors Forum into the creepiest place for the coziest Open Mic. There were refreshments, prompts, and activities for the Honors community and anyone else invited.
There was a great span of talents, from celloists to stand-up; we thoroughly enjoyed watching them all from our moody-lit chairs. The reviews were raving, with students loving it as a community event.
The Honors College always has a course preview night when we near the start of registration for the next semester. The Scribendi staff took shifts to inform those interested in what Scribendi, both the class and the magazine, is all about.
There was a good amount of interested students and bookmarks given out, but an almost oddly large number of staff that showed up. For every one student asking questions at the table, there was an average of five staff members manning the table, plus some roaming the room. That’s passion, baby.
To get the magazine design juices flowing, all the staff members made their personal design scrapbook. We had many different aesthetics, including mosaics, receipts, and many flyer scraps. Think of this as a sneak peek into what elements may or may not be incorporated into our final magazine design.
Scribendi has been getting around, spreading the good word to all corners, both near and far.

Our wonderful editors have also been seeing the airport, with travel to the National Collegiate Honors Conference in San Diego. They are doing a wonderful job with their posters, being spokespeople for Scribendi to the whole Honors community.
