It is with much pride and joy (and battles with Adobe InDesign) that we bring you Scribendi Volume 40! Featuring amazing work from our contributors, hand-drawn tiles, and much more, this edition is our love letter to our roots in Albuquerque and the larger Southwest. From popped tires at conferences to nearly losing the magazine altogether, our staff has poured their all into this year’s volume to bring you something that we hope is timeless—earning a resting place on coffee tables and bookshelves for years to come.
Whether you are a student at The University of New Mexico (UNM) or a curious mind from around the world, we want to share this edition with you! If you are ever on or around the UNM campus, you can always feel free to stop by the Scribendi office in the Honors College and ask for a copy, completely free of charge. On the flip side, if you’re reading this from beyond the realm of Albuquerque (or the stories of our office ghost have scared you away), you can also read this year’s magazine online or order a copy to be shipped to you! If choosing the latter, we do request a $10 donation to cover the cost of shipping.
The Road to Volume 40
While we did have a bit of a waiting period as we anticipated the magazine’s final run of prints, we used the time to deepen our understanding of traditional print and prepare for the next year!
Starline Printing Visit
Our annual visit to Starline was informational and fun. While we had been working through various drafts of our magazine over the semester, it was rewarding to see the final pieces begin to fall into place and learn more about the world of printing.
Honors Preview Night
Before we officially published this year’s Scribendi, we were already on the lookout for next year’s staff! During UNM Honors Preview Night, our staff sang the siren song of Scribendi, attempting to lure unsuspecting students to apply for staff in the coming year.
Western Regional Honors Council (WRHC) Conference
With such a large anniversary this year, our staff decided to celebrate like the party animals we are in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kidding! Kind of… Jokes aside, we were lucky to be hosted by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas during this year’s WRHC conference as we released Volume 40 for the first time. By attending poster sessions, presentations, and more, we learned about everything from convenience stores to fellow publications (Hello Palouse Review!).
Local Release Party
When we returned home to celebrate our release in Albuquerque this past weekend, we were honored to be supported by so many friends, family, and contributors. We had a packed house in Hodgin Hall as we were joined by UNM President Garnett Stokes, Interim Provost Barbara Rodríguez, Dean of the Honors College Naomi Yavneh Klos, and many more. Thank you to all who attended for welcoming Volume 40 with open arms!
Submissions are Open!
If you are reading this as an honors student at any university, please submit your creative work to be published in the next year’s edition! It is completely free to submit, and there are even cash prizes available for the best work in every category. We cannot wait to see what you all have in store for us to share in 2027.
Welcoming Incoming Editors
“But if you’re leaving, who will be reviewing what I submit to Scribendi next year?” you may ask. Never fear! As we prepare for the next year of submission review, graphic design, and more, we are excited to welcome back not one, not even three, but four (4!) (IV!!) staff members to pave the way for Volume 41.
When asked about what she is most excited about in the next year, incoming Managing Editor Trinity Padilla said that she is most looking forward to getting to know the next year’s staff and seeing what they have in mind for the next design. Likewise, incoming Outreach Editor Maria Paez says she hopes to charge the new staff with the energy and enthusiasm we shared this year. Padilla and Paez will be joined by Digital Editor Oliver Fernandez and Communications Editor Riley Williams. Believe us when we tell you, Scribendi will be in great hands.
Merchandise
Have you been looking for an opportunity to represent Scribendi, but a tattoo seems too committal? Consider purchasing some of our new merch! Our staff worked tirelessly to bring you a tote bag rooted in this year’s design alongside a timeless tee for you to wear with pride.
Stop by the Scribendi office in the Honors College to grab one for yourself!
Casa Urraca Press Fundraiser
We have partnered with the gracious group at Casa Urraca Press to bring you a special deal regarding Scribendi and the UNM Honors College. From now through May 31, 2026, 25% of any purchase of a work written by a UNM Honors faculty member or alum will go directly to the Jackie Schlegel Memorial Honors Endowment for Scribendi. Please take the chance to explore the amazing works from Honors faculty past and present.
Thank you for reading about Scribendi Volume 40 and our adventures over the course of the year. Subscribe to receive new posts and keep up with the next year of Scribendi.
