...Your bestie is in town!

Welcome to SCREEN SOMM, a newsletter filled with recommendations of what to watch, from me, Kristen, a screenwriter. Last week we made a watchlist for tough times. … your besties is in town and you want to watch something together but mostly chat.

Yay! Your best friend is here and you have a lot of fun plans, but it’s also a rare opportunity to get to watch something together in person. But also very important that you get to talk the whole time because they did not fly 3000 miles just to not hear your voice.

• Rec #1 - Start a new series that you’ll still enjoy even if you’re not memorizing every single frame.

  

  Suggestion: Ride or Die. Watch on: Amazon Prime

  An action comedy series about two lady besties on the run.

• Rec #2 - Rewatch a beloved movie you’ve both seen so you don’t lose the plot of the movie as you follow the captivating plot of the hour-long low-stakes gossip saga your bestie is relaying about their therapist’s dog, or whatever.

  

  Suggestion: Death Becomes Her Watch On: Rent or Buy

  An early 90s comedy about 2 rivals’ obsession with beauty and each other.

Last week I visited the Academy museum with a bestie. I saw some very cool exhibits, especially one on the worlds of production designers Sarah Greenwood & Katie Spencer (Barbie, Pride & Prejudice, etc)

But oh my, the museum shop was excellent. Here’s a sampling:

1. Coveted this Jaws T but they didn’t have my size in stock.

2. Freaking cute Ponyo socks

3. Loved this but real missed opportunity. You clearly need a bigger “mug.” For all the coffee? Because you’re extra tired so you grab this mug? You get it.

4. Parasite hoodie - If it wasn’t 80 degrees I would have dropped the 80 bucks.

5. Flip-o-scope - An awesome way to bring home movie magic. BTW the museum is filled with similar zoetropes. We saw the room-sized pixar one. It was unbelievable.

6. The store’s film strip wallpaper was it’s own work of art and I want it.
