...You and your partner have completely different taste

Welcome back to SCREEN SOMM a newsletter filled with recommendations of what to watch, from a screenwriter. Last week we discussed ‘A Room With A View’ as a ‘Pride & Prejudice’ fix. Next week will be a literal Classic (don’t want you to know too much, hehe). I promise you, even if I’ve never heard of it, I have an opinion on it. Sorta what I’m known for.

Let’s get to this week’s recs!

… You and your partner have completely different tastes.

You love each other but that doesn’t mean you’re the exact same person with same tastes. I get it. I LIVE it. My husband and I have very few shared hobbies so when we find something we enjoy watching together, it’s amazing. Suddenly, it matters a great deal less that I lack his passion for backgammon and that I cannot say with confidence that he has ever watched an entire Star Wars film. (Don’t worry, I’ve made sure he’s seen at least some of Andor, I’m not a monster.) The solution to this, and an ingredient in both of my recs, is quality. What can I say, except, you’re welcome.

• Rec #1 If you don’t have children or aren’t constantly bombarded with kids stuff everyday — watch a high quality family movie. It’s new, it’s neutral (something likely not on either of your radar), but it’s fun and very well made.

Suggestion: Moana Watch on: Disney+

• Rec #2 A show that neither of you have seen but maybe one of you has been meaning to watch (or both, or neither), but that you have heard is very good. Something that has at least a couple seasons so it will allow you to spend some time together whether you are watching weekly or daily or sporadically and not have to go through the decision process again for a while. And by the next time you have to decide, you will have more of a sense of what or who you, as a pair, want to watch more of. Or you’ll come to me 😉

I love my Samsung Frame TV. When people walk into my house and mistake it for a real work of art? Highest compliment. And with the Deco Frame, it feels like the equivalent of velvet curtains on a stage, but for my TV. Elevated, baby. I also love the way it lets me think about other people’s art every day, and with my daughter, even if that means sometimes just uploading random stills from KPop Demon Hunters. The girl’s got taste, what can I say. Here’s a few of my faves from the Samsung Art Store

MOVIES • ‘Series’ • Did Not Finish* • Rewatched • Ongoing… • 🍼= first rewatch >20 years

• ‘Widow’s Bay’ (ep 2-6) - so good, so funny. But spooky.

• ‘Bridgerton’ (Season 4 ep 6-8) - If I start, I won’t stop complaining.

• ‘Spider-Noir’ (ep 5-7) - It’s getting a little less sure-footed in the second half. Curious if it sticks the landing.

• Disclosure Day - First attempt - I thought the movie started with an alarm. It does not. It was a fire alarm. We evacuated. I went home.

• Disclosure Day - Second attempt - I had a blast. It suffers from some pretty cringey logic leaps and assumptions about what people care about in an existential way, but emotionally I was so swept up. And somehow, after all these years, Spielberg did something with a car and train chase sequence I have NEVER seen before. My jaw was on the ground. Even his worst film is pretty fine and it’s not his worst film. Go see it!

• TOY STORY 5 - Toys v Tablets. Given how good every other toy story movie is, this one might be amazing.

• Las Culturistas Culture Awards (Bravo/Peacock) June 17 - The Awards show you wish other awards shows were like.
