Celebrate my second act with me.

Sneak Attack is the second book of my second act. Quitting webcomics and deciding to start a new career in kid-lit after crossing the 50-year mark held no guarantees. Most people don’t get to live their childhood dream; crazier still, to get a chance at a second act. Even rarer is to pull off that second act with any success.

Just like with my career in webcomics, I had no grand plan when I started this journey. I didn’t even really know how to write for middle-grade readers. I just started winging it.

And in the process of learning, I rediscovered the big feelings I had at that age. The anxiety, the daydreaming, the desperate need to belong. I rediscovered that kid on the bus whose stomach soured the closer he got to school.

Sharing those experiences in these books and seeing young readers connect with my characters has been the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. I’m hooked. I’m all in.

The generally accepted reality in 2026 is that only about 20% to 25% of traditionally published books ever earn out their advances. If I’m reading my royalty statements correctly, Table Titans Club Book One is trending in that direction.

Now book two is about to hit shelves, and I’m hoping to experience what industry pros call the “series glow” or “backlist bump.” When book two hits shelves, it can act as a massive marketing engine for book one. I’m hoping parents who see Sneak Attack on shelves face out will search for book one as well to catch up.

Librarians often wait until a series has at least two or three books before committing budget to it, or so I’m told.

Book one has also made it onto six state lists, which really helps.

Hey, I’ll never be Dav Pilkey or Raina Telgemeier. But I’m loving being Scott right now. All I want is to make comics and survive. I had no idea if anyone would even care about these books. So far, it’s been an embarrassment of riches.

That’s all because of you, by the way! You’ve been with me from the beginning and supported me through thick and thin. Now you’re buying my stuff for your kids (how did we get so old?). Thank you so much for everything.
