Sometime during the reign of Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar, between 14 AD and 37 AD, a mysterious craftsman came forward claiming to have revolutionized one of the ancient world’s most delicate materials. According to historical accounts by ancient writers like Petronius and Pliny the Elder, the anonymous craftsman had allegedly invented an unbreakable, flexible glass known as vitrum flexile.
Hoping to win the Emperor’s favor, the craftsman managed to get himself an audience with Tiberius and brought along a magnificent glass drinking bowl to prove what he had made. To demonstrate it, he threw the bowl with full force against the floor. Instead of shattering into a million pieces like ordinary glass, it merely dented, almost as if it were metal. Then he pulled out a small hammer from his toga and casually pounded the dent out, returning the bowl to its original shape.
For a room full of people used to glass breaking the moment it so much as wobbled, this alone must have looked like magic. But Tiberius, rather than reacting with awe and joy, grew deeply unsettled by the demonstration, sensing a profound threat to the stability of his empire.
Tiberius asked the craftsman whether anyone else knew the technique for making this flexible glass. The unsuspecting craftsman proudly said that he alone knew the secret, just waiting for a big reward. He’d just performed what was probably the single greatest party trick in Roman history, and he had no idea he was about to lose his head over it.
Tiberius ordered his execution, and the man was swiftly beheaded. The secret formula for flexible glass died with him, never to be recovered.
Tiberius’s deadly logic was purely economic. He feared that if a material as durable as vitrum flexile became widely available, standard precious metals would lose their worth.
Gold and silver, which formed the very foundation of the Roman economy and the Emperor’s treasury, would have plummeted in value if citizens could own unbreakable glass that was far more practical. To save the economic status quo, Tiberius chose to execute the genius inventor and bury the technology forever.
While the story is interesting, it is assumed by most historians to be almost certainly apocryphal. This is because no archaeological evidence of vitrum flexile has ever been discovered, and even the ancient writer Pliny the Elder added a caveat while writing the story, noting that it was “more widely spread than well authenticated.”
Even so, there have been modern speculations about how the glass might have actually been made. One theory is that the craftsman could have stumbled upon borax or boric acid by chance, or imported it from outside. By mixing boric oxide into the standard Roman glass mixture of silica and soda, then heating it to extreme temperatures, the glass-maker could have produced an early form of borosilicate glass.
This kind of glass would be highly thermally resistant, basically the ancient cousin of the Pyrex dish sitting in your kitchen right now. Though it wouldn’t bend like metal, it would have been something relatively unbreakable.
Now, even if we allow, just for a moment, that the story could be true, it’s hard not to feel bad for the craftsman. He walked in expecting a reward and was beheaded for inventing something really extraordinary. Real or not, it remains one of history’s most ironic stories.
