Crista Grasso · Scale Differently

Are the parts of your business you’re pouring your focus and attention into the ones that will help it grow, or simply the ones you love?

As founders, it’s very common for us to spend more time in the parts of the business that we love and are good at because focusing on our strengths is often what helped us build successful businesses in the first place.

But when you only focus on what you're good at, you can end up overlooking other important areas in the business that are needed for continued growth.

This is an important lesson that Celi Arias learned through building and selling a global fashion brand and coaching other businesses, and what shaped the work she does today as a scaling strategist and founder of ScalePilot.

In episode 294 of Scale Differently, she shares her story on how she’s scaling differently and what it takes to simplify business growth.

For ten years, Celi ran her fashion brand mostly on her own. She grew the revenue, but as she describes it, she also became the bottleneck, because growing revenue and actually understanding the mechanics of growing a business turned out to be two different things.

Without that second piece, everything still ran through her and led to exhaustion and burnout.

It wasn’t until years later, as a head coach responsible for dozens of clients at a time, that Celi started to see the pattern behind why she’d become the bottleneck in her own business.

It was the same pattern she now saw showing up in the businesses she was coaching, of business owners avoiding what would bring about the growth they wanted.

At first, she thought she was simply a good diagnostician since when clients would lay out what they thought their problem was, she could see that the actual issue was somewhere else.

But the more clients she worked with, the more she realized diagnosis wasn’t really the thing… instead, she discovered that:

“When things get uncomfortable, when the house feels like it’s on fire, you’re not going to take the time or energy or investment to learn or develop a part of yourself that’s underdeveloped.”

This led her down the path to what she does today where she helps business owners understand what area their business needs them to focus on next, even if it’s not their strength.

Simplifying growth means being willing to understand and look at the places you’d rather avoid, because they be exactly what your business needs most.

Celi breaks it all down on episode 294 of Scale Differently, where we deep dive into knowing where to focus to simplify business growth including:

  • The downside of only leaning into your strengths

  • The lessons she learned after selling her first business

  • What skills you need to develop for long-term growth

  • Key things that help you start making better decisions

  • How Celi scales differently based on everything she’s learned
