I feel like I read a lot last month, but apparently I only finished four books! Audiobooks always take more time for me, and The Absolute Book was quite the epic (around 18 hours at 1x speed, though I listen at 1.25). Also had a few DNFs - perils of being a mood reader. These were the books I finished and enjoyed.
Lush descriptions and deep themes of revenge and redemption make this a heavy but rewarding novel.
Cozy fantasy set in a magical 1920s Montreal. Come for the deft handling of grief, obligation, and complicated sibling dynamics; stay for well developed characters, some of whom happen to be cats.
Before Sunrise-coded in the best way. A Florida woman (not Florida Woman) inexplicably wakes up in Ireland after being mugged. She meets a hot Good Samaritan (as you do) and they wander around sightseeing, having meandering conversations, and falling in love.
I love books where you can tell the author is having a great time (even if her characters aren’t). The irreverent, masterful use of language and situational humor make this a rollicking read. Cover art and marketing aside, the magic system and characterization are wholly original.
Reading: The Sharing Knife series by Lois McMaster Bujold
Watching: I’ve been traveling, so whatever looks good on the seatback screen (or over the shoulder of the person seated a couple rows ahead)
Listening: The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo (narrated by the author)
