SARAH PENROSE · Evidence Based Homeopathy?

Stress can be Emotional, Physical and Chemical and includes three main types: acute, episodic and chronic.

Acute stress, most common, is the immediate reaction to a new challenge or demand, and increases our resistance to infection by promoting immune cell migrations to sites of infection and/or inflammation, stimulating immunity which promotes redistribution of immune cells from the blood to other organs in the body.1

Episodic stress is frequently occurring acute stress episodes often leading to a constant state of anxiety, over-reaction and inflammation.

Chronic stress results from long term exposure to stressor/s and may lead to significant health problems due to the fact that prolonged stress impairs the overall capabilities of our immune system.

Vithoulkas and Carlino propose within their “continuum theory”2 the importance of high fever as hallmark of an efficient immune system proposing its absence as a sign of chronic inflammatory disease - during classical homeopathy treatment, a return of common infections with fever typically occurs as the chronic inflammatory disease state improves.3

Homeopathy & theory in practice

The whole system of homoeopathy is based mainly upon the principle that overcoming disease is accomplished by drugs capable of producing, in a healthy individual, similar symptoms to those of the disease to be treated.

One of the many forms of chronic stress is sleep deprivation, which interferes with our immune processes. Sleep is essential to good health and helps regulate appetite, metabolism, moods, hormonal and cardiovascular functioning. Sleep is essential for healthy growth, learning and development in children, and for cognition.

Try to eat before 6pm, TV, devices etc., off by 7pm, and into bed at 9pm.

Also, we must keep in mind that the development of chronic disease can arise from ongoing severe stress or deep psychological conflicts

Homeopathy & Parental Burnout

·

February 8, 2024

Parental burnout can be defined in a parent who endures chronically severe stress without having sufficient resources to assist them to cope. Parental burnout often has significantly detrimental effects upon children and partners.

Chronic stress without relief can result in distress which may lead to a range of conditions including heart disease, diabetes, depression & anxiety and irritable bowel syndrome.

Low grade chronic inflammation will eventually trigger the chronic disease/s the person is predisposed to genetically.4

The article An integrated perspective on transmutation of acute inflammation into chronic disease and the role of the microbiome discusses the mechanism by which a healthy person subjected to continuous drug treatment for acute inflammatory conditions (at a certain time) leads to chronic disease

The lower GI tract is commonly affected by chronic stress due (mostly) to the “brain-gut axis.”5 Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gut-brain disorder with 50% of sufferers experiencing just GI symptoms.6

Co-occurrence with anxiety / depression occurs in 40-80% of IBS sufferers and is associated with more severe symptoms, reduced Quality of Life (QOL), and increased physical and mental distress. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine), a major factor in IBS, has a prominent role in controlling gastrointestinal motility.7

A personalized approach using pharmacologic, dietary and psychological interventions is recommended for IBS sufferers however, reduced QOL, sometimes significant disability, and impaired workforce productivity leaves many sufferers dissatisfied with their medical care which necessitates the need for other approaches to IBS treatment.8

Microbiome beta diversity alteration during individualized homeopathy treatment for multiple sclerosis has been documented

Homeopathy is grounded in the principle that ill health may be addressed via the substance which produces similar symptoms (like with like).

Homeopathy considers you as an individual, comprised of your conditions or diseases, psychology, sensitivities, stress reactions, sleep, appetite, social standing etc., etc.,

Homeopathy combines your sufferings, totally aligning with the Biopsychosocial model Bio (pathophysiology); Psycho (emotions); Social (environment)

Gastroenterological complaints are commonly seen by professional homeopaths. 2019 Systematic reviews showed a little overall IBS symptom improvement after homeopathy,910 and a 2023 Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial (DB-RCT) found individualized homeopathy acted significantly in IBS-QOL and severity scores.11

A DB-RCT of homeopathy and insomnia showed improvements.12

During 2024, the European Journal of Rheumatology published their Systematic Review that classified homeopathy as a promising and safe therapy for the treatment of six rheumatological diseases including fibromyalgia.13

Homeopathy is a true biopsychosocial treatment able to induce positive outcomes in global well-being, energy levels, and multiple symptoms and dimensions of a person concurrently.14

The most common and under-treated form of physical stress comes from a longstanding condition or overuse, both of which are also known as chronic physical stress.

The use of arnica in trauma induced via sporting injury, arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions is well supported across three systematic reviews.15 16 17

Homeopathy & Arnica

·

June 5, 2025

The use of homeopathic Arnica for the treatment of acute pain is common and shown, to prevent excessive haematoma and surgical sequelae being similar in efficacy to conventional over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Chemical stress is induced by pollutants and toxins i.e., smoking, drugs, alcohol and glyphosate, cleaning products etc., which can disrupt health by affecting our liver, kidneys and nervous system.

Oxidative stress is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants which can damage cells and tissues, and drive system wide inflammation aka disease.18

There is a link here with excess iron which generates oxidative stress, particularly in brain, where anti-oxidative defences are relatively low.19

Copper may enhance release of excess iron from stores. Copper depletion is seen in iron-loading disorders, such as hereditary hemochromatosis, and may be caused by high-dose iron supplements particularly in pregnancy when widely recommended.20

Homeopathy & Zinc

Do you really, really, really need that supplement?
Is it possible that you are doing yourself more harm than good?
Another example here is taking vit D in isolation will deplete vit A…

Supplementary zinc when not required will deplete our copper stores.21

It is well known that plant-based diets cause serious nutrient imbalances and long-term damage to digestion and cellular metabolism that are not easily corrected. Likewise, soy and processed foods are toxic and must be avoided at all costs.22

Cod liver oil is a good addition for most23 a great supplier is codoil.co.nz

Eat cooked foods only for IBS flare-ups, fatigue or sensitive stomachs. Why? It is so much easier to digest AND cooking, roasting and grilling increases the abundance of beneficial bacteria and antioxidants.24

Homeopathy & The Mind

Australians work with a professional AROH registered homeopath most commonly for mental health, also the main reason for visiting the GP, evincing alignment with health needs of general Australia, and highlighting homeopathy and mental health as both valuable and within scope of practice.

- it reshapes our connection with life and existence, increasing our overall well-being levels - and may improve sleep quality, be effective in improving mental health, and benefit health via reduction of inflammatory responses.25

Positivity in our emotions, engagement, language, relationships etc., has been found to enhance emotional, social, and mental health and well-being especially in children.26

Bach flower rescue remedy has been shown to promote positive emotions in prolonged, negative, extreme, or out of balance emotional reactions.27

‘In contrast to frequent claims, the available Meta Analyses of homoeopathy in placebo-controlled randomised trials for any indication show significant positive effects beyond placebo. Compared to other medical interventions, the quality of evidence for efficacy of homoeopathy was similar or higher than for 90% of interventions across medicine. Accordingly, the efficacy evidence from placebo-controlled randomised trials provides no justification for regulatory or political actions against homoeopathy in health-care systems.’28
