Intentions: energizing, harmonizing, voice

I’m a musician and I enjoy dancing, so it probably won’t surprise you to learn that I’m also a big believer in the power of music and dance to heal and energize us. Rhythm, harmony, and the vibrations of sound can deeply affect our bodies, bringing us into a state of active balance. This is the note I want to hit mid-day, and it’s the origin of this Ritual of Movement: to have a moment of holy joy, a moment of dance.

Try to do this ritual in private, so that you can really let loose. It can bring in a wonderful energy to do this ritual right after the Ritual of Clearing. Make sure you have a little space to move, and then go nuts.

  • drum or other instrument (optional)

  • recorded music (optional)

Chant or sing while you beat your drum:

The wind sings and I sing
The thunder claps and I clap
The rain drums and I drum
The trees dance and I dance

The air sings and I sing
The fire claps and I clap
The water drums and I drum
The hills dance and I dance

This song is written to call down the elements into you in order to enliven you with natural energies, but you can sing or play any song you would like for this ritual.

If you prefer to listen to recorded music, sing along with it, and beat your drum along with it. The specific song isn’t as important as that you can sing, drum, or dance along with it.

Move in the way that feels right for you. If you’re injured or low energy, this may be a slow dance. If you would like to raise energy, try a faster dance, to get the blood moving in your body. Move with the the rhythm and let its rhythm mirror your own. Let out anything that you feel your body is holding onto. Let the music move through your body, through every muscle, nerve, and pore.

  • Try working with sound healing or breathing exercises that are designed to move energy through your body. Check out chakra frequencies or binaural beats to see if these sound healing techniques work for you.

  • If you have limited mobility, try more gentle movement, such as gentle stretches or swaying. If you can’t dance, try singing, or play an instrument if that works better for you.

  • If you experience deafness or inability to make or hear sound, you may prefer drumming your feet, clapping your hands, or waving your arms. Whatever you do, try to move in a rhythmic way.
