Is Clark Street the new Grand Design District?

Sometimes I forget to look around and notice what is in my own backyard. Literally. That’s something I’m working on lately: Presence. Being in the present solves a whole host of problems - your health, outlook, abundance, connections, and more. I lived in Andersonville for 9 years, in the greatest Swedish Gay neighborhood that exists. (Max used to call it this) So what better way to stay present than highlight these essential, local Northside design staples that are within walking distance of my home for our monthly I love this for you?

First up, a shop that should be on every designer’s list, and one that has that special piece you’ve been looking for: Scout. An Andersonville staple since 2004, it was purchased last year by Salvage Haus’s Alexander Jorge. The essence of this store remains stable: you can find unique vintage furniture, a storied piece of art, or a brass elephant bookend in this curated environment. Styled and sold by interior designer Sheryl Ridenour, Scout not only has that perfect statement in a non-cluttered and clean environment, it’s going to have it for a reasonable price. But you have to shop it in person, as their ever-rotating inventory moves fast. And, they’re expanding. Come June 27th, you’ll be able to double your hunting pleasure as they take over the space next door.

Next is Heritage Home Supply, a new offering by Bloom and Co’s Benjamin and Rebekah, which highlights paint and wallpaper from UK heritage brand Little Greene, hard to find European and UK fixtures and hardware, lighting, cabinetry, and even your supplies for installation. While you’re sourcing and shopping, pop in next door for the eye candy that is Bloom & Co, with a rotating display of pattern rich wall-coverings, upholstery, fireplaces, hand-made furniture, and save yourself a trip to the Merchandise Mart. Even if you’re not doing a full renovation, you can pick up pillows, candles, and accessories for a room refresh or gift. Each of these new Northside design staples (opened in 2025) have generous trade programs and their owners are a wealth of information and warmth that makes you feel instantly at home in either store.

Moving slightly North, this Edgewater neighborhood has a lot of gems, with long time staples Gethsemane Garden Center and Sauce and Bread Kitchen (I go for their natural wines and pastries). Most recently, Prospect. This vintage and reclaimed furniture shop from Scout’s original owner, Larry Vodak, opened this winter. Along with artist Michelle Peterson-Albandoz, they’re bringing us all the curated finds we need to layer our homes with patina and presence, with an emphasis on how our homes make us feel.
