I know from my conversations with my clients that many struggle when it comes to really determining what their style is. So naturally, not knowing your style means that you probably don’t have a wardrobe that makes you feel confident, and reflects who you are now. And often it’s because you aren’t addressing the root cause of why you feel like you have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear.
Here are some of the symptoms that show up for women:
You feel bored and uninspired by your typical go-to outfit which doesn’t work for you anymore.
Or you’re someone who feels guilty about all your unworn clothes. You wear 20% of your clothing, so 80% just hangs there hoping to be chosen, way in the back of your closet.
Or maybe you’re the woman who spends the morning trying on 10 different things before finding something that works, so you’re starting the day feeling frazzled and behind.
No matter which one of these you can relate to, settling for clothes that don’t fit you anymore, wasting time in the closet looking for the perfect outfit, or feeling limited by your closet - the underlying problem is the same.
You have changed and your clothes have not.
Here are 3 fundamental reasons why you may be in a style rut:
1. Your taste has changed
Throughout your life your style evolves and changes usually as your roles and lifestyle does. But sometimes your clothes aren’t changing to reflect where you are in your life ~ they may feel outdated and irrelevant. That means your go-to outfit of oversized sweaters and skinny jeans, don’t work for you anymore. No matter your role, you don’t feel modern and put together. But somehow you keep putting them at the front of the closet and wearing the outfit on repeat because you’re unsure of where to start, what’s in style, and mostly what works for the life and body you have now.
2. Your body has changed
Just like your styles change, so does your body. Clothes that were your go-to favorites are now snug in areas they weren’t before. So even though you try to wear them, not only are they uncomfortable, but they don’t look the way they used to. This is probably the biggest issue I hear when working with clients. Whether to keep those pieces and lose the 10 lbs, or take them out of the closet and buy clothing that actually fits them now. Fit is everything! If you notice what you’re wearing day after day, week after week, it’s most likely what feels good on you. It’s a blazer that you can actually button, pants that you don’t have to hold your breath to fasten, a blouse that lays flat instead of straining at the bustline because it’s too tight. Sound familiar?
3. Your lifestyle has changed.
This last clothing challenge is a change in your lifestyle. It could be a new role at work or a complete career change. Possibly it’s that you went from working full-time at an office and are now working from home, but your wardrobe doesn’t reflect that. You have half a closet full of beautiful suits and dresses that go untouched every day. Maybe you’ve had a change in personal circumstances, like recently retired or divorced. Or you’ve been a stay at home mom and you’re ready to re-enter the work force and your casual chic uniform is not going to cut it. Whatever the reason, your clothes don’t feel right to you anymore because they’re better suited for your previous lifestyle.
Showing up in your new role in clothes from a previous role makes it hard to convey who you are at this moment. You know your old clothes aren’t right, which is why you keep passing up most of the clothes in your closet and end up wearing the same old thing. It’s confusing because you don’t know what dressing for your new lifestyle looks like.
So, the answer is to edit out clothing for “future you”. It only adds stress and confusion in the daily exercise of getting dressed. It’s time to accept your body, recognize that your taste and style has changed (no matter how much you paid for that jacket), and step into your new lifestyle with grace and confidence!
